About the Artist

The Seattle Times raves that Jade's "uncanny ability to connect classical music with the sounds of today" is inspiring. Known for her versatility and charisma both on and off the stage, pianist Jade Simmons was crowned Miss Illinois and first runner-up at the 2000 Miss America Pageant where she performed Chopin live before a television audience of millions. Jade is a graduate of Northwestern University and holds a Master's degree from Rice University, where she studied with Jon Kimura Parker as a Provost Fellow. She is passionate about the role of the arts in education and created Mozart on the Move, a program that was used with great success throughout Houston, educating and introducing students to the passion and relevance of the arts.

Product Description

Pianist Jade Simmons' debut CD The Rhythm Project: Revolutionary Rhythm crosses industry lines and smashes stereotypes. Revolutionary Rhythm is an eclectic collection of contemporary and modern American classical music that displays Jade's affinity for highly rhythmic repertoire. In her debut recording, Jade performs the music of iconic American composers Samuel Barber and John Corigliano as well as a younger guard including Austin-based electronic music guru Russell Pinkston. In Haitian-American violinist/composer Daniel Bernard Roumain's (DBR) Hip-Hop Studies and Etudes, Jade performs alongside electronic hip-hop beats manufactured by Simmons and Los Angeles-based colleague and band mate Jonathan Sanford.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Revolutionary CD! March 30, 2009
Format:Audio CD
This CD was so exciting. There are not many recordings of Barber's Sonata for Piano. It is in character with most of Barber's other music, brash, tonal but not a fanatic about it, and rhythmic. Simmons is able to coax that aggressiveness out of the piece without becoming overbearing or pounding. Although she is a very beautiful woman there is nothing "girly" about her playing.

The Pinkston piece was a pleasant surprise. I was prepared for modern music that sounded like drunks moving furniture but was very surprised to find an elegant and virtuostic piece. Simmons touch is perfect and blends withthe precorded sounds seamlessly.

Corigliano's Etudes are not frequently performed or recorded. This is one chance for listeners to get inside the style to find the substance. The rhythmic pulsation in the music are expertly performed by Jade Simmons.

The Hip-Hop Etudes were the pieces I approached with trepiadtion. I expected it to be a shallow, gimmicky piece tossed on to attract crossover audiences. I was so WRONG! Musically complax and very interesting with beats created specifically for this recording. I was blown away.

This CD h s moved to the top of my personal playlist. I heartlily rercommend it to anyone interested in piano music that is out of the box.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth buying the album on this one! November 17, 2009

I really like this album as a whole. Great repertoire selection, and superb playing. The Barber and Corigliano are very well done, and the Hip Hop Etudes are interesting and definitely worth listening to. I'm glad I bought the whole album.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it!! December 28, 2009

I found this c.d. on a rad Brittish site [...]. and loved it right away. Jade's playing is inspired, passionate, driving and technically perfect. The selected pieces are a great collection of soulful neo-classical modern compositions for piano.
