Book Description

February 1, 1997
In the early years of the third millennium, an alien ship lands in the New Mexico desert. Its occupants are a mysterious, yet peaceful, life form known as the Holn. After a six-year stay, during which thousands of curious humans flock from all over the world to visit the spacecraft-turned-museum, the Holn depart suddenly, leaving behind 17 teens who had, until that morning when they entered the alien craft, been adults. Now, with complete memories of their former adult lives, they struggle to come to terms with this "unasked-for" gift.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't know what to think, December 2, 2001
This review is from: Rewind (Mass Market Paperback)
Hmmm.. I agree with most of the reviewers who say that the book kinda kills itself with the unrealistic assumption that adults in children's bodies would be legally seen as children, and treated accordingly.

Still, the book was interesting to read. But now that I've put it back on my bookshelf, I'm beginning to wonder - what exactly was it supposed to tell us? That children have (almost) no rights? First, we knew that. Second, the children depicted in the book aren't really children, they're grownups in children's bodies. So the book really isn't about children and their place in society. It's about something else. I just don't know exactly what. And you can't put too much symbolism in it, because most of the world surrounding the children is painted in fairly easy colors, without much detail, so you can't extrapolate some deeper wisdom about the society we live in - as far as I could see, the book was a 'what if adults ended up in children's bodies?' and there's not much we get out of the answer, because it doesn't have much relevance in real life. If we accept that, it's an enjoyable book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I had written this!, November 25, 2004
This review is from: Rewind (Mass Market Paperback)
A very touching book with some great characters. Wish I had written it.

To the commentator who objected to the depiction of a world full of religous (and other) zealots: that IS the world we live in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating character portrayals, August 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rewind (Mass Market Paperback)
As a teacher of gifted children, I enjoyed this view of "adults" trapped in "children's" bodies. Some of them sound a lot like kids I know! : )

Try not to get hung up on the "legal" inconsistencies other critics have mentioned - - our society is by no means a tyranny, but unusual circumstances will provoke extreme reactions in the best of situations. And our world has NOT been a very friendly place for children lately... or =anyone= small and weak.

The interaction of the "rewound" children with each other and the rest of the world, the perspective of adults who find themselves in children's bodies, and the ease in which readers can picture themselves in the main characters' positions (well, if you have imagination, of course) all serve to make this a novel highly recommended.

Mr. England sets up a fascinating scenario for a sequel of sorts (see p. 335)... I hope he'll consider it!
