CHRISTIAN SCOTT
Yesterday You Said Tomorrow

When trumpeter Christian Scott was growing up in New Orleans in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, his grandfather gave him and his brother Kiel extra reading assignments each week as a supplement to their assigned schoolwork. If the young students failed to finish their books within the week, their grandfather would say, “Yesterday you said… Read more in Amazon's Christian Scott Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

At 22, trumpeter Christian Scott plays beyond his years. He not only has chops to spare, and the Berklee College of Music education to go with them, but also an understated elegance you don’t often find in players this young. A New Orleans native, Scott also has an uncanny ability to juxtapose benchmark jazz styles, nearly all of which he no doubt absorbed through prolonged exposure to Miles Davis: fusion, funk, postbop, modal, smooth. On his Concord debut, Rewind That, a standout fellow Crescent City product, alto saxophone veteran Donald Harrison, is on hand to enliven several cuts, including a lovely, languorous arrangement of Davis's "So What" (from Kind of Blue). But whether feeding atmospheric effects with his purring notes or pushing against the groove to brassier effect, Scott is very much in the driver's seat with his assured band, including guitarist Matt Stevens, tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III and drummer Thomas Pridgen. He sometimes settles for decorative, Chuck Mangione-type phrases, but most of the time, the substance of his playing is right up there with the style. Nine of the 11 tracks are originals. --Lloyd Sachs

4.0 out of 5 stars lyric trumpet with roiling percussion, June 6, 2006
This review is from: Rewind That (Audio CD)
Whenever you compare a musician to Miles Davis, and I do, the question becomes "which Miles Davis?". Miles had many changes of style.

I would say Mr Scott reminds me most of the second quintet, with Wayne Shorter & Herbie Hancock "Footprints", or perhaps "In a Silent Way", (despite having an uptempo version of "So What"). The underlying percussion has that roiling, boiling constant motion quality of Tony Williams. Mr Scott's trumpet is lyric, breathy melodic. Often the rhythm secion is doubletiming or quadruple-timing the dreamy overdubed duet trumpet or trumpet and sax leads. His guitarist reminds me of Pat Metheney.

His original compositions show a maturity and understanding of the historical roots of Jazz far beyond his years. A music hard to pigeonhole with influences from many sources. Nearly all original songs are modal or minor key. It seems to have that dark, midnight, melodic, melancholy edge and a tone I associate with Miles Davis before '64, but instrumentation from later. A Fusion feel. Samples tell a lot.

Recommended new artist.

This review is from: Rewind That (Audio CD)
Strong major label debut from this young musician. I think every cut on this CD is a winner. He plays with clarity and imagination on every cut. I recommend this CD to anyone who wants to keep their eye on an up and coming musician to watch in the future. I think his sound is creative and innovative. He is expanding the genre as well as creating his own unique style. This is a musician with a vision that will only continue to grow by leaps and bounds. After all originality isn't suppose to sound familiar!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Jazz rocks!, June 27, 2006
This review is from: Rewind That (Audio CD)
I had the pleasure of seeing Chritian Scott and his quintet at a Jazz Festival this past weekend. he was the freshest sound there. To a guy groomed on rock, I must say, this guy ROCKS! The guitar riffs, bass lines and drum rythyms set up an awesome driving force and then he compliments it with a meoldic trumpet and sax. Some of my beef against Jazz is that the melody gets lost in random tangents, at least that's what it sounds to a non-Jazz person like me. But I can follow this music and really enjoy it. Definitely worth every penny I spent for this CD and I would have paid the whole festival fee just to see him!
