4.0 out of 5 stars lyric trumpet with roiling percussion
Whenever you compare a musician to Miles Davis, and I do, the question becomes "which Miles Davis?". Miles had many changes of style.

I would say Mr Scott reminds me most of the second quintet, with Wayne Shorter & Herbie Hancock "Footprints", or perhaps "In a Silent Way", (despite having an uptempo version of "So What"). The underlying percussion has that...

4.0 out of 5 stars lyric trumpet with roiling percussion, June 6, 2006

Whenever you compare a musician to Miles Davis, and I do, the question becomes "which Miles Davis?". Miles had many changes of style.

I would say Mr Scott reminds me most of the second quintet, with Wayne Shorter & Herbie Hancock "Footprints", or perhaps "In a Silent Way", (despite having an uptempo version of "So What"). The underlying percussion has that roiling, boiling constant motion quality of Tony Williams. Mr Scott's trumpet is lyric, breathy melodic. Often the rhythm secion is doubletiming or quadruple-timing the dreamy overdubed duet trumpet or trumpet and sax leads. His guitarist reminds me of Pat Metheney.

His original compositions show a maturity and understanding of the historical roots of Jazz far beyond his years. A music hard to pigeonhole with influences from many sources. Nearly all original songs are modal or minor key. It seems to have that dark, midnight, melodic, melancholy edge and a tone I associate with Miles Davis before '64, but instrumentation from later. A Fusion feel. Samples tell a lot.

Recommended new artist.

Strong major label debut from this young musician. I think every cut on this CD is a winner. He plays with clarity and imagination on every cut. I recommend this CD to anyone who wants to keep their eye on an up and coming musician to watch in the future. I think his sound is creative and innovative. He is expanding the genre as well as creating his own unique style. This is a musician with a vision that will only continue to grow by leaps and bounds. After all originality isn't suppose to sound familiar!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Jazz rocks!, June 27, 2006
This review is from: Rewind That (Audio CD)
I had the pleasure of seeing Chritian Scott and his quintet at a Jazz Festival this past weekend. he was the freshest sound there. To a guy groomed on rock, I must say, this guy ROCKS! The guitar riffs, bass lines and drum rythyms set up an awesome driving force and then he compliments it with a meoldic trumpet and sax. Some of my beef against Jazz is that the melody gets lost in random tangents, at least that's what it sounds to a non-Jazz person like me. But I can follow this music and really enjoy it. Definitely worth every penny I spent for this CD and I would have paid the whole festival fee just to see him!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rewind that a winner, November 5, 2006
This review is from: Rewind That (Audio CD)
It's so nice to get a new jazz cd where the artists main interest isn't showing you how fast they can play. This whole cd is rhythmic and seducing as Christian Scott and his band blend beautifully together. As a musician, it's wonderful to hear jazz players play as a team instead of a bunch of individuals. Scotts band does so to a tee.

5.0 out of 5 stars This music makes my day! - by an unsohpisticated reviewer, April 27, 2006
This review is from: Rewind That (Audio CD)
When I heard the song Say It, playing on the radio, KNTU FM, I had to have this CD. It was because of the contrast between the horns and the guitar. Like the guitar was going to rip out, but then it just was so smooth and melding perfectly with the other instruments. The guitar sound on that song reminded me of work by John McLaughlin for some reason.

Of course, the CD is all about the trumpet. And wow. Christian Scott and the other musicians on this CD deserve all the acolades they get, and more.

I went right out and purchased the CD, and have been playing it over and over. I really like it.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a fresh album, presenting a player with impressive potential., April 22, 2006
This review is from: Rewind That (Audio CD)
After seeing Christian Scott live with Dick Oatts last year, I could tell he would eventually be a force to be reckoned with in the jazz world. This album shows his continuing development.

[...] I feel this is not an example of traditional jazz. Scott's performance on this CD shows his ability to play jazz with a funk/rock vibe. He is very talented playing in a more traditional style, but this CD is an example of his ability to innovate in a more contemporary genre. Hints from Sketches of Spain, a dreamy free-flowing Miles Davis album, are evident in Scott's album, and the expressive melodies and solos he performs are wonderfully lyrical, showing the Miles influence. His chops are exhibited by his ability to flow in and out of the changes with ease.

Despite my focus on his potential, even if Scott wasn't the young player he is, the album would still be worth the purchase. I recommend "Rewind That" strongly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Album from a rising Star, March 30, 2006

I first picked up this album because of the cover art, but as soon as I popped it into my stereo I fell in love with the richness of Scott's style. He explores the range of his trumpet to bring about melodies that are reminds us that though bop is great, there are other areas of the genre a young artist can explore. This is deffinately a worth while purchase and I can't wait to see what this guy does next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal, July 15, 2008

I can't believe that I have slept on this album for 2 years. My jazz collection is mainly saxophone jazz from Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright, Paul Taylor and Mike Phillips to name a few.

My ears have been burning for a different sound. I always loved the sound of the trumpet, even when I played in marching band in high school, although I played clarinet.

I came to Amazon with the intention of listening and maybe purchasing Roy Hargrove. He wasn't really my taste, I saw the photo link below while reading about Hargrove, for Christian Scott. I listened and I immediately became hooked. It only takes a few seconds for me to hear a track. If it doesn't start off right from the first few notes then I discontinue listening to any artist.

I purchased the Rewind That album and I love it. It is "hot". The smooth jazz station I listen to don't play nothing on this level. This is jazz! For me, it is sexy, soulful, and funky. I love the percussion on it and the guitar has a hint of rock on first track, Rewind That. I think the arrangements are creative and unique. Honestly, I like every track, I can't single out any.

This is a blessing to my collection, please support this artist. He is the truth!

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Jazz recording of 2006, April 29, 2006
This review is from: Rewind That (Audio CD)
Jazz music today is confined by two titles developed by marketing directors, and radio formats. The two terms "smooth Jazz" and "straight ahead" have been used to distinguish Jazz based from the use of electical and acoustic instruments. "Rewind That" with the use of electronic instruments cannot be classified in the realms of "smooth jazz." Yet, the term "straight ahead" also disolves the clarification of that genre. Simply stated, Christian Scott presents a direction of Jazz that may defy categorization. The depths and moods of the compositions caress the sensibilties of Miles Davis, yet connect too modern grooves that are far removed from the pentatonic driven backbeat of "smooth jazz" glory. However, the funky groove is implied without the feeling of guilt that one may get from listening to a "wave" format radio station. Christian's tone is full and deep, it quenches your thirst and fills your hunger. It allows the listener to connect their mind with their soul. The use of electic instruments, mainly the guitar also implies the art of "straight ahead Jazz," yet allows you to feel that your in the 21st century. "Rewind That's" groove's, sophistication, and freshness will revitialize your hope in music.

I purchased this CD after hearing this young man play a Christmas song on TV. All I remember is writing down his name and saying I need to support him. This CD is soooo GREAT and I would recommend to anyone that enjoys stealing a few quiet peaceful minutes for themself to relax and reflect. Looking forward to more music by this artist.
