Youssou N’Dour and his reggae thing

After countless forays into the western world, Youssou N’Dour chose Dakar as a base from which to lead his geopolitical campaign in music.
His strategy is pan-African: "What all of us Africans share is much more important than what we don't share," says this elegant, fifty-year old youngster, who grew up in the Medina in ... Read more in Amazon's Youssou N'Dour Store

Format: Audio CD
If you're lucky enough to, get ahold of a copy of "Rewmi", as it is one of the best Youssou N'Dour records I have ever heard. "Rewmi" (Jololi, YNDCD003, c. 2000, total running time 34:34) is an import CD on the African Jaloli label that was made for direct distribution primarily to N'Dour's native Senegalese audiences. Fortunately, some copies of this disc made it out of Africa since its' 2000 release and it is truly a joy to listen to as it pares down N'Dour's music to its' essence unadorned by the occasionally more elaborate pop production found on his more internationally distributed discs. The `mbalax' or rhythm roots of Youssou's music are brought up front and center by the prominent presence of the rolling and snapping tama drum sounds. Electric lead and rhythm guitar riffs and keyboard fills appear and fade throughout these six songs all of which are propelled by N'Dour's powerful multi-octave vocals sung in his native Wolof tongue. Other reviewers have extolled the sound achieved on "Rewmi" as being the closest to what N'Dour and his band sound like live and in concert. Only one of the tunes on "Rewmi" that I am aware of, appears on an international release that being "Yaama" (which is featured on 2000's `Joko'). Again, by all means search out and savor "Rewmi" as it distills and captures N'Dour's unique world beat sound in all its' rhythmic danceable glory.

Can music this good possibly be OOP/not-yet-digitized/whatever? This is sublime music from start to finish, gorgeous in its execution as well as in the engineering aspects. Should be checked out at the earliest opportunity.
