Book Description

0325004331 978-0325004334 August 21, 2002

Daniel Heuser knows that lasting educational reform comes not from the reports of policymakers, but from advances in research and the experiences of classroom teachers searching for a better way to educate their students. In Reworking the Workshop he offers a plan to dramatically improve how your students construct math and science understanding.

Underpinning his book are three important ideas based on research and classroom experience:

  • some ways of teaching help students understand math and science better
  • good math and science teaching resembles good literacy teaching
  • math and science workshops combine reform teaching techniques with a familiar, successful lesson format.
With these tenets in place, Heuser offers practical ideas for developing students' natural faculties in math and science by applying advances in research to proven workshop techniques.

Just like in literacy workshops, students engage in hands-on learning, choice, reflection, inquiry, and problem-solving as they deepen their understanding of math and science. Teachers widen their understanding of great teaching, too, as they see the powerful synergies between successful literacy education and successful math and science education at work in their classrooms.

Practical, research-based, and forward-thinking, Reworking the Workshop takes teachers through every step of reforming their classroom: from planning curriculum, teaching minilessons, managing hands-on activities, and encouraging reflection, to assessing student learning. It even offers advice on how to line up support for reform efforts by communicating with administrators and parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Math and Science turn around, July 21, 2003

Heuser shows teachers how to integrate reading and writing workshop methods into mathematics and science. Heuser guides you step by step in a new way of thinking about your teaching. This is the best education book, cover to cover, I have read this summer. Teachers are under greater pressure to teach more content in a limited day. The possibilities for greater learning opportunities are endless. If you are looking to create an exciting science and math program with your students, this is the book to buy. Reworking the Workshop is a math and science turn-around book. Buy two copies and share it with your colleagues. They'll thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reworking the Workshop, a new way of thinking about teaching math and science in elementary schools, November 26, 2010

This review is from: Reworking the Workshop: Math and Science Reform in the Primary Grades (Paperback)
I have been teaching for 9 years, and every year I have thought to myself, this isn't working, for math instruction. Our district adopted a program about 7 years ago that encourages hands on math, however, any program is designed for the ideal student in mind, not the 22-25 students who are in my classroom every day. Last year I began to preassess my students before each unit to see what skills they were strong in and what skills needed more development. This year, I dove head in to implementing "math workshop" in my classroom. THis book helped to guide the process, and the idea of having a "math notebook" has improved the problem solving skills of my 2nd graders more in 2 months than I have seen in over a year the old way I was teaching it. It is refreshing to read a text that inspires teachers in encourage thinking, exploration and discovery. I reccomend this text to any teacher (or parent) who is looking for a fresh angle on math and science instruction.
