Great Series Not So Great Ending,
This review is from: Rex Mundi Book 6: Gate of God (Paperback)
I have been a loyal follower of the Rex Mundi series since the beginning. I have always found it intriguing, and part of the fun of the series was seeing where they were going with the whole thing. Without giving too much away, I feel like they really flubbed the ending. It had everything that a loyal reader expected to see at the end...that is the problem. The series was just so good at being different, and not being predictable, that the ending was kind of lame because it gave us what we expected. In the end there were so many cool elements that Rex Mundi laid the groundwork for that they didn't end up exploiting. The whole thing just felt like the authors were ready to move on and did the quickest most predictable way to end up the whole thing. I am sad to see it come to a close, but more because it felt like there was still more story to tell than because the ending was satisfying.

Rex Mundi's story is told now. It was a good ride, but a bit of a letdown at the end, as most of these holy grail stories tend to be. After all, the author is faced with a choice between writing of a truly changed world, or one that just had an adventure and came out roughly the same way as it started. It is more the latter than the former. The art is superb, as it has been throughout the series, but the characters don't look the same as in earlier books, which makes it disjointed. Perhaps that's because of the change of artists mid-stream. All in all, a good story, but one that had run its course.

Rex Mundi is the Best Comic in Print,

Rex Mundi ends with a bang. I won't give anything away, but the end is satisfying and the writing only gets better with each issue. The art is beautiful as always.
Arvid Nelson created a universe that continues to live in my mind. |
