Dr. Sundel has remained at Childrens Hospital since 1986. Among his responsibilities there have been service on ten committees including those on clinical research, quality improvement, clinical practice guidelines, medical student education, and internship selection. At present, he chairs the Program Review Committee on Intravenous Immunoglobulin, another of his research interests. He has been an attending physician in several programs and is Director of the Childrens Hospital Rheumatology Program.
Additionally, since 1994, he has been assistant coordinator of Harvard Medical Schools Pediatric Core Rotation at Childrens Hospital. He is Medical Director and Service Chief of the Center for Ambulatory Treatment and Clinical Research at Childrens Hospital, and serves on the Harvard Medical School faculty. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Rheumatology and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
In addition to holding state licenses from New York and Massachusetts, Dr. Sundel is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Board of Allergy & Immunology, and the Sub-board of Pediatric Rheumatology of the American Board of Pediatrics. He has received the Janeway Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching from Childrens Hospital, the ALPHA Therapeutic Award for contributions in the field of immunology, and the Adolescent Service Award for outstanding service to the Janeway Inpatient Medical Service. He serves on the Education Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Section of Rheumatology, and on the Subcommittee in Juvenile Arthritis of the Arthritis Foundation of Massachusetts.
Dr. Sundel has published a number of journal articles on Kawasaki disease and on the treatment of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, especially that involving intravenous immunoglobulin. He is an ad hoc reviewer for the European Journal of Pediatrics, Arthritis & Rheumatism, and Pediatrics. He continues to research Kawasaki disease, Lyme disease, pediatric arthritis, and therapeutic applications of intravenous gamma globulin, and to publish the results of his research in many journals and books.
