This evocative retelling of a Maasai fable features a hare who finds that her home has been taken over by a mysterious interloper. "I eat rhinos for lunch and elephants for supper!" booms a terrible voice from inside the cave. The little animal bolts for the safe haven of a few jungle friends who promise to help; the ferocious outcry, however, thwarts every attempt. A sassy pipe-smoking frog, awakened by all the commotion, storms into the cave and reappears with the culprit: a roly-poly caterpillar with strong vocal cords. Though Spurll's lush jungle foliage and primitive page borders impart a believably African tone, her oddly anthropomorphic animals frequently seem like TV cartoon escapees. Realistically drawn for the most part, the creatures sport incongruous props and disconcerting facial expressions. The implicit message, however--what you can imagine is often scarier than what actually exists--is well taken. Ages 4-8.

A little hare is terrified when she comes home to hear a voice booming out of her own cave, proclaiming itself a voracious monster. A fox who offers to drive the monster away proves to be just as easily frightened, as do a series of ever-larger animals. In the end, it's a doughty little frog who waves her walking stick and rousts out the source of the scary voice: a cheeky caterpillar. Mollel, whose retelling of another story from his Maasai heritage, The Orphan Boy, is a Notable Children's Book for 1992, tells this amusing cumulative tale with a verve that especially recommends it for oral sharing; Spurll sets her wonderfully expressive animal characters in a carefully composed jungle attractively bordered with a lively geometric design, adding such delightful touches as a bespectacled leopard reading to her wide-eyed cubs. My five-year old adores this book. It has great illustrations and an engaging story line about a monster hiding in the cave that turned out to be a tiny caterpillar. It is hillarious and involves child attention. After the first reading my son knows who is hiding in the cave and tries to reasure all the scared animals every time we read it. This book is a joy to read for both a parent and a child and has a great message that what we fear often turns out to be small issue.

This book holds the attention of its intended audience beyond belief. The repetitious phrase, spoken by the would be monster, enables young readers to stay involved as they anticipate each animals incounter. Older readers can't wait to find out the monster's true identity. Best of all the illustrations don't give the monster's identity away until the appropriate time. All during the story it is evident the children's imaginations are whirling wildly. A must have for any teacher or reading volunter.
