A Great Way To Introduce Snowboarding To Young Children,
By mlarsen@cisco.com (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rhinos Who Snowboard (Hardcover)
Julie Mammano's first wrote about these aggro rhinos in her first book, "Rhino's Who Surf". She brings the same sense of playfulness and imagery to these marauding rhinos as they continue their adventures upon the frozen waves in Julie's second book "Rhino's Who Snowboard". We're introduced to the team of rhinos as they wake up, drive up to the mountains, and "bust out fast down the fall line", "carve perfect powder fans", and "catch phat air over insane gaps". Now, before you start laughing, remember, this book is aimed at kids 4-8 (though that hasn't stopped my 2 year old to thoroughly enjoy it as well). Julie has effectively captured the flavor of a day riding, though I'll have to admit, I wonder if these rhino's are sponsored (they're certainly good enough to be *B^) ). The illustrations are a blast of color and whimsy. The use of geometric overlay to the snow and the sky makes for a rich backdrop to the illustrations, and the expressions on the rhinos faces are fantastic. There's also a glossary of "board speak" (among other standard definitions of halfpipes, 'fakie' and 'stiffy', she defines 'hohos' as being a "two handed handstand", and 'kooks' as "jerks who ski or snowboard"). Julie is, herself, an avid snowboarder, and the sense of love for the sport comes through in her vibrant illustrations and entertaining prose. Sometimes, as an adult, you may find yourself cringing a little at the choice of words, but then, this wasn't written for me, it was written for my kids... and they love it!

not for young children,
By Megan- College Student (Medina, OH United States) - See all my reviews

This book is not for kids. The lingo is too complex. Unless you are a snowboarder, you have no clue what the book talks about. There is a glossary in the back but who is going to read that to 5 year-olds?

My boys, ages 3 and 5 absolutely love this book! If you know children who are interested in skateboarding, they will love it too. Great illustrations, fun and easy to read.

I think that this book is hilarious! Some kids I babysit have this book and they love it too. The pictures are great and the lingo is helpful for anyone who wants to know how real snowboarders talk. It is fun for me to read, so I dont mind reading it over and over.

Not for my kids....,
By Colleen Mohammed (Costa Mesa, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rhinos Who Snowboard (Hardcover)
Rhino's who Snowboard is not a book for younger kids. What 4 year old is snowboarding or needs to know what "Phat Air" is. And what parent would want to buy a book for those so young that teach it's ok to call someone a "MOGUL hopping KOOKS" which according to the glossary in back means," bump jumping jerks" And the older kids who do snowboard should be reading books with a little more depth to them. This book has great illustrations but has a lot lacking in the story line.
