Pelican City is one of the best bands i've been turned on to in resent months.Rhode Island is definitly their best so far.Their music is very Trip-Hoppy.In the genre of Massive Attact & Portishead.Very spacey & laidback. It's a great mix.I hope to see them get some national attention in the future they deserve it.I've turned a few of my friend's on to them so far.And they all say the same thing. They're Great!I hope this review helps to sell a few more discs.

5.0 out of 5 stars so chill, so good., July 24, 2005
This review is from: Rhode Island (Audio CD)
This is actually one of the best CDs that I own. It's a shame that Amazon doesn't currently offer track samples, because it simply has to be heard. The album offers smooth, mellow beats with enough flavor to keep the listener held from start to finish. It's a short, but skillfully produced album with wide appeal. It has captivated nearly everyone that I have played it for.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Groove, November 20, 2000

Definitely worth the money spent. Deep earthy instrumental trip hop with nice samples, good mixes, and a vibe unlike many others. Worth checking out if you like other trip-hop groups such as portishead. No vocals, but that works for this great new band.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Trip Hop Should be, May 1, 2009
This review is from: Rhode Island (Audio CD)
This is what Trip Hop should be. Solid samples, great beat, dirty mix and no screwed up vocals. I wish that Brian would return once more to his roots but in the mean time enjoy these sounds which seem to be a soundtrack to fit any situation.

4.0 out of 5 stars some thought provoking tracks, September 30, 2005

the whole album could have flowed better, in of themselves certain tracks were very well produced; i expected more in the lines of their 'soundtrack' cd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Coastal Journey, November 16, 2000

A worthy follow-up to their first album, Pelican City takes you on a trip up the Atlantic to Rhode Island. What their particular interest in this northern state is I do not know, but the sounds definitely makes this progression with ease. Sticking to their Athens roots, PC expands their sounds as they wind their way up the coast. Adding some bluesy tarheel flavor, along with some true east coast hip-hop, these guys continue to ease and soothe you thru their field of dreams. The subliminal mindscape here is simply gorgeous!

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly understated and tasteful, November 16, 2000
By
This review is from: Rhode Island (Audio CD)
Pelican City is a type of concept album that relies largely on mood. The music is at times similar to acts such as Portishead and Hooverphonic but by comparison takes a much more direct approach. In other words, the songs, written by producer Brian Burton, are more stripped down and do not rely on extensive production. In contrast to many trip-hop acts this album takes a much more lo-fi approach by comparison. Rhode Island could easily serve as a movie score or soundtrack. The songs are thought provoking and contain an almost visual aspect. Some of the album's highlights are the experimental opener, "The Icefields" the moody "Sesame Street" and the elegant "The Bordello" These songs have a beauty all their own and this proves that Burton is one of the most underrated of the genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth It...., October 12, 2000

Aaron Pevey (Gainesville, GA USA) - See all my reviews

Great CD. It practically yells of talent yet undiscovered... music still to be found and written by the disc's producer, Brian Burton. Each track is soulful, moody but never over-powering, and some of the pieces are downright thought provoking.

"The Northside" (#3) rocks, mixing in a nice groove with a great sample. Two tracks later, "The Bordello" (#5) floods you with lonely visuals of night-time walks, sky-gazing dreams, and wishing-on-a-star hope.

Pelican City is one to watch, that's for sure. Good job Brian :-)
