3.0 out of 5 stars Great performance... really!
However, one catch... the banjo player is just too loud. Now that tells me (as a sound man) that they may have employed the old radio studio technique of using only one microphone with the players in a semi-circle around it. To make this work, balance is key and the players have to understand where they need to be in relation to the mic, how far back, who is to the side...

There's not a clunker of a song here, and the video and sound are so good that you genuinely experience the intimacy of the performance. It helps that Vincent has a big personality backed up by incredible talent. Don't miss this one. A rare treat, and a great introduction to bluegrass for anyone who considers it too country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting For Any Bluegrass Fan or Fan of Rhonda Vincent, April 22, 2005
This review is from: Rhonda Vincent and the Rage - Ragin' Live (DVD)
This is a wonderful concert DVD that has been added to my music library. The music is hard driven from the beginning to the end. Excellent showmanship, musical skills, talent all around. It was nice to see The Cherryholmes children fiddling on the show with her, and the other guest talent, Cody Kilby from Ricky Skaggs.
Make sure you watch the bonus footage when they go home place where The Sally Mountain Shows & Festival are held. You meet a lot of her family members and hear about their music heritage. If Rhonda is playing in your area, go see her and the Rage-you will NOT be disapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any music lover, April 10, 2005
This review is from: Rhonda Vincent and the Rage - Ragin' Live (DVD)
Finally we get to see this amazing performer in a venue suited to the best of the Bluegrass genre. I will admit to being a huge Rhonda Vincent fan but this DVD showcases her talent and that of her band in a way that can only be described as magnificent. If you are truly looking for an artist who will move and reach you with a variety of themes including hard driving train songs and touching ballads, this is the ticket. Everything on this DVD is very good and you will appreciate the single performances of her band members especially Josh Williams who delivers a great song of his own and stands out as a flat picker extraordinaire. Along with Kenny Ingram's fabulous banjo stylings her fiddle player is among the best I have ever heard. Overall it is a must have for any music lover

In one word: awesome, must have for any bluegrass lover. Let me elaborate: Rhonda Vincent offers and extraordinary performance aid by his outstanding band: The Rage and some guest performers. Rhonda is able to show her vocal and instrumental prowess. She can sing, play the mandolin, the guitar and the fiddle (and who knows what else!) effortless (one of the extras in the DVD helps the viewer understand how can this be possible). The set up of the concert is very plain and nice. A sober theater in Saint Louis, MO and a very simple stage provide a nice background that allows the music shine for itself. There are not fancy props, effects, pyrotechnics or anything that distract from the musicians and their art. It is very different from the regular fodder that video concerts seem to offer and it is, oh, so refreshing in that way. The sound is nice and clear both in the standard stereo and the 5.1 versions. The camera work is very straightforward and thankfully the editors didn't think it was necessary to jump all around. The extras are very nice too! The documentary called "Sally Mountain Memories" it is very interesting and nice as it opens a window into Rhonda's life and with it into the real bluegrass community and ethos. It is very personal and almost raw in the production department that gives it that "home family video" feel that I don't think is a gimmick but the way the video was made. The photo galleries are ok. The one from the concert I didn't even finish, didn't care for stills of what I can see in the video. The one about Rhonda's life was nice but it could have used some captions to help us know what we were looking at, without it I was at lost for a good part of them. The outtakes and credits are a very nice touch; it lets you see what happened in the making of the concert in a very unpretentious way. Overall, this is a six stars DVD. Even my wife who doesn't care much for concerts in DVD enjoyed this one thoroughly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ragin' is RIGHT!, November 26, 2007

This review is from: Rhonda Vincent and the Rage - Ragin' Live (DVD)
Rhonda Vincent and the Rage's "Ragin' Live" is a superb DVD! Absolutely wonderful performance by Rhonda Vincent, her band The Rage, and a few select guests--including her own daughter Sally and also a couple of the amazingly talented Cherryholmes kids. The blazin' banjos, fiery fiddles, and magnificent mandolin (the latter played by Rhonda herself, of course) made for a phenomenal bluegrass experience! Even the Sheldon concert hall itself, where the live show took place, added to the overall flavor as it reminded me of Nashville's legendary Ryman Auditorium--albeit much smaller and more intimate. I actually LIKED the "personal story" part where Rhonda takes us back to her hometown and shows us around. What a sweet and beautiful Missouri girl she is, after all! But the real "meat" of this DVD is Rhonda's electrifying performance on stage, surrounded by a band whose every member is a prodigious talent in his own right. The guy who came up on stage to blow the "whistle" kicking off Orange Blossom Special was really cool. And when have I EVER seen a "commercial" so artfully done as when Rhonda and her ensemble include the Martha White Theme in their live repertoire? 5 stars (at least!) for this DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Stop Listening, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Rhonda Vincent and the Rage - Ragin' Live (DVD)
A very precision performance by Bluegrass' best. Rhonda's voice and instrumentals are perfect and the backup vocals superb. Banjo Master Kenny Ingram's fingers fly faster than the eye can see. Hunter Berry saws his fiddle in two and Josh Williams' guitar picking is as good as it gets.

Recorded live, the evening is a triumph of wholesome Middle American values and traditions. A must for any serious bluegrass fan.

I listen to all genres of music. This DVD is among the best of my collection. The personal story "extra" is a real treat.

The sound & picture quality are both GREAT! No let downs with this DVD. There's even a little humor thrown in!

If you're breathing and you like to listen to music (any good music), then you'll enjoy this DVD, trust me...

I simply don't know what else to say about it other than I bet you'll enjoy it as well as my family does...
