Book Description

March 14, 2006 3 and upP and up
With her trademark simple verses and charmingly realistic illustrations, Shirley Hughes pays a visit to a lovable brother-sister pair that little readers everywhere will recognize.

Coloring pictures together, creating a playhouse under the table - Annie Rose spends a lot of time with her big brother, Alfie. Whether the two of them are depicted splashing in the rain or following footprints in the snow, sailing a toy boat or watching clothes dance around in the dryer, Shirley Hughes's quiet rhymes and slice-of-life images offer snippets of the familiar moments that make up a preschooler's world - and an endearing ode to sibling and family bonds.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-A welcome collection of 20 fresh new poems about Annie Rose, her family, and friends-beloved characters who have starred in The Big Alfie and Annie Rose Storybook (Lothrop, 1989) and other favorite titles by Hughes. The subject matter is right on target for young children-simple, everyday pleasures; humorous character studies; and flights of the imagination. Cozy English homes and tidy gardens, a nursery brimming with cuddly stuffed animals, and inviting pastoral scenes are depicted in full-and double-page paintings and vignettes with attention paid to small details. Facial expressions are particularly engaging, displaying a wide range of emotions. The rhymes have a brisk, lilting rhythm that makes them just right for sharing aloud.

From Booklist

Ages 2^-5. Annie Rose and her brother, Alfie, play and dream and discover the world. With wonderful domestic detail, Hughes' line-and-watercolor pictures capture the toddler's joy and mischief, fear and affection. The rhymes are a little forced (not as good as Hughes' simple prose stories), but the words have a physicalness and a beat that children will love ("Lickery, stickery, jammery jee, / Buttery toast and buns for tea" ). The messy warmth is part of every scene. There are action rhymes for fingers and toes as well as idyllic country scenes of "chewing, mooing" cows. Best of all is "Summer Numbers," with a double-page spread of a busy neighborhood that makes you zero in on things to count, from "ten tall aerials" to "four lazy cats" and "two squealing children." Hazel Rochman --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the sweetest book for babies and young children., April 2, 1999
This review is from: Rhymes for Annie Rose (Hardcover)
I named my baby girl, Annie Rose, and so when I found out about this book I had to snatch one up! It is an adorable and gentle little poetry book for young children. My baby enjoys it; even my 3- and 5-year-old boys love it. They think Annie Rose is so funny and they like her big brother, Alphie too. We have read this book many times together and have enjoyed it every time.

This review is from: Rhymes for Annie Rose (Hardcover)
My two-year-old daughter recently received this book for her birthday. She was immediately intrigued by it and wanted it read to her often. About two days later she picked it up once again to have it read to her and announced, "I yove dis book."

5.0 out of 5 stars A favourite at our house, June 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Rhymes for Annie Rose (Hardcover)
We read this book at least once a day when my daughter was 18 months old, until she was three. She really identified with Annie Rose, and the day-to-day events in Annie Rose's life. As a parent, I enjoyed this book too, even after the one-millionth reading. I think toddlers and preschoolers really enjoy the peeks at everyday life that Shirley Hughes creates.
