Rhymes with scrap,
This review is from: Rhymes with Witches (Paperback)
This book is extremely predictable...
At first, you are introduced to a teen queen wannabe-Jane. All she's ever wanted was to be popular, and can't help but admire the "Bitches" a group of girls-one from each grade. Then, all of a sudden the "Bitches" want Jane to be one of THEM! As Jane starts to become one of them, she learns their secrets and rituals. At some point in the book, they talk about "Sandy" who happens to be a school teacher. A little confusing? Yes. Myracle, doesn't even bother to go in depth about her role in the story, and only briefly touches on the subject. My advice to you? Don't read this book. Although the story may seem intriguing at the beginning, it is anything but. It's extremely predictable and much like the mean girls story, except harsher, and a little creepier. Afterall, it does deal with witchcraft. Hope this helped!

Where's the rest of the book?,

It's like this book got published before the author finished the ending. She's an entertaining writer, but the plot drops you off with no explanations. What's the deal with the cats? Why did Jane bring all of her dad's things with her? What's with Camille's about-face in the end?
I'm thinking there's a sequel on its way? Even so, the book should have been wrapped up in some coherent way.

Good Attempt,

This review is from: Rhymes with Witches (Hardcover)
Rhymes with Witches is about a social outcast, Jane, who gets invited into the school royalty group called The Bitches. I found this book to be exactly like the rest of Lauren's books. Even though her books have a very shallow plot, you can't seem to put them down. And then once you get done with it you feel very dissatisfied and wondor why on earth you gave that book the time of day. One of the reasons I hate this book so much is because of the characters. The only character you're really supposed to like is Jane, and I found her very annoying and tiresome. I hated the ending as well. When Jane finally tries to do the right thing, she winds up having nothing but Phil, the only semi-enjoyable character in the whole book. I personally think this book sends the wrong message to readers, and I discourage anyone from buying it.

Rymes with witches is a book i think every girl in high school can relate to.,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Rhymes with Witches (Paperback)
Jane has always been a nobody in school. She goes to a typical high school with the witches that everyone notices and adores. The witches consist of one girl from each class. The witches were looking for a new 9th grade member to join them. For some reason they choose Jane. Jane has no clue why, she is invisible and nobody notices her. She thinks that the witches are playing a prank or somthing on her, but soon everyone is noticing her. Soon Jane realizes it isn't easy being a witch. Her new clique informs her that there are some sacrifices that need to be made; sacrifies that could wreck her high school reputation and could ruin lives. Is Jane really willing to hurt people to stay extemely popular? Or, is she willing to give up her whole reputation as one of the witches to help out her friends and save them from the evil witches. This is a book that once you pick it up you can't put it down. I strongly reccomend that Rymes With Witches should definately be the next book you pick up and read.

I absolutely love this book! I read it in one day and am craving more! I wasn't sure about it at first because I'm not too big into the unrealistic hocus-pocus stuff, but Lauren Myracle did an EXCELLENT job of writing this. It gives an inside view of high school on the top of the dog pile at all the parties and conversations of all the really popular kids, and also a view of the bottom of the dog pile (poor Jane). It also adds interest to the whole scene with the mystery of witchcraft. I would recommend this to any girl in high school or anyone with a little high school left in 'em. :)

Rhymes With Witches Review,
By Charlito "Roberge" (U.S.A.) - See all my reviews

How far would you go to be popular? Would you want it enough to steal other people's possessions? Well, in this book, these four girls will go that far to be popular. Jane is the freshman school dork until the three popular kids, ( there are on from each grade) plan to pick Jane as the next popular kid. Jane soon finds out that being popular isn't so great after all, it involves stealing lip balm, bracelets, and bobby pins from kids in her class in order to make her popularity grow. In the process of stealing, Jane soon figures out that stealing from people makes the person she steals from less popular because she sucks their popularity when she steals their posessions.Jane wants to drop out because she dosen't konw the first time she steals that it hurts them so she stole lip balm from her ex-friend Alicia, which makes terrible things happen to Alicia. Will Jane put up with the price she has to pay to be popular or will she drop out?
Step aside Mean Girls because the characters in this book are meaner than Mean Girls. That's why I liked it. I loved how this book had you guessing what awful tings were going to happen next. I would say Lauren Myracle outdid heself in this chilling tale. I liked how this book tought used witchcraft to become popular instead of their looks and clothes. I would recomment this book to 13-15 year girls who like books on how to become popular and witchcraft and are ready for a twist on the traditional theme. This book will have you thinking my the end how far will you go to be popular?

mean girls meets the blair witch project,
By Alexandra (Medford, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rhymes with Witches (Paperback)
Jane has always been kind of boring. But now, as a freshman, she sees her chance for greatness. At her high school, the ruling clique of girls, aptly named the Bitches, consists of one girl from each class. They aren't the prettiest, or the smartest, but they are super-popular, and nothing happens without their approval. If Jane were to become a Bitch, her life in high school would be set. So naturally, she's ecstatic when she is chosen. After a "trial" party, the Bitches officially ask her to join their ranks. Of course, Jane agrees. But several things about the Bitches disturb her. First off is the way they become popular. Jane suspects that it's not all kosher, and she's right. But how can she go against her new friends? The Bitches are It at her school, and now that she knows their secrets, she doesn't want to go from someone to no one over night. She wants to stand up to them, but she's too weak, and too scared of their power-- literally. This book rings a Mean Girls bell with a dark and sinister twist. The Bitches are far more intimidating than they first seem, and the reader will have no choice to finish it immediately to find out how it all ends. The ending is a bit rushed, but it works to add to the chaotic nature. Jane is a loveable character about whom the reader will be worried from the start. One piece of advice: You don't want to leave this half-finished before going to sleep.

Not as creepy as people say but a good book,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Rhymes with Witches (Paperback)
When plain Jane Goodwin is asked to become one of the Bitches (school royalty) she can't refuse. She will finally be popular. Not the regular kind of popular but so popular that no one can help but worship her.All she has to do is every week steal somthing from another girl and place it on the desk of Lurl the Pearl the creepy early religon teacher.Sounds simple right "For one to rise another must fall?". Not.
Because a tiny part of Jane's brain is telling her this is wrong. But the bigger part of her brain is making up excuses for her and the other Bitches' behavior. But when Bitsy (the junior Bitch) tries to harm another girl named Camilla Jane stops making excuses and tries to help Camilla who's not as innocent as she seems. This is a good book that will make you look at the popular girls at your school and think "Are they really that ruthless?" |
