4.0 out of 5 stars Another side of Sam, November 2, 2002

Sam's voice can never go "wrong". These selections, far, far better than the rock'n'roll you've heard, still don't showcase Sam's talent quite as much as his Gospel. Some pretty, if predictable, songs, given new life from Sam's incredible talent. Get it, but don't miss the chance to hear Sam sing with Soul Stirrers, he makes the most of his immense talent there. If Gospel is not your choice of music, then this is the closest you will come to hearing Sam at his best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Album is Great, July 23, 2005

I just love..love...love this album. I can't find the right words to really express the feeling I get when listening to Sam's velvety smooth voice. If you're feeling down in the dumps this album will lift your spirit. My favorite song on the album is Chain of Love. I think I would enjoy listening to just about anything that Sam Cooke sings. I have his gospel and rhythum and blues music. He has been a favorite of mine since the 60's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential CD for any collection!, March 27, 1999
This review is from: Rhythm & The Blues (Audio CD)
This is what Soul Music is all about! RCA should release on CD the actual albums these songs came from (They've already released Night Beat, maybe that's a start). I can't give much more praise than the other reviewers gave, except that the remastering job is First-rate. These songs flow together VERY smoothly. And it includes one of my favorite Cooke tunes, Nothing Can Change This Love. I think Steve Perry (Journey) heard this song a couple of times too. A Great album for just about any mood you're in! I just want to know when the Sam Cooke Box Set is coming out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Have mercy, Sam, this is too much, May 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Rhythm & The Blues (Audio CD)
This cd is sooooooo choice. Stunning velvety vocals from Sam accompany sultry piano and organ with soft touches on the cymbals. Every song is slow and seductive; each one cruises gracefully toward a perfect, graceful conclusion. This is bluesy soul music at its best. It lifts your spirits and takes you to that enchanted land called SOUL. A perfect example from his impressive body of work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine Jazz - Blues Collection!, February 24, 2008
This review is from: Rhythm & The Blues (Audio CD)
This collection covers 3 albums that Sam Cooke released for RCA in the early 1960's. Though they all contain mostly cover-versions of blues and jazz material, the albums are really quite different. The most recent album "Night Beat" from 1963 comes out by far the strongest. On this album Cooke is backed by a small, but very solid band, including the legendary Billy Preston. On the other two albums the Cooke is backed by a big orchestra and many songs are simply burdoned down by too heavy orchestration. On the other 1963 album "Mr Soul" there are some great exceptions, where the orchestration works. Especially on one of the just two Sam Cooke originals on the collection "Nothing Can Change This Love". This is the standout-track on this release. From "Mr Soul" also "Chains of Love" is very good.

Though Cooke's vocals are impeccable as usual, none of the tracks from 1962's "My Kind of Blues" really appeal to me - mostly due to the arrangements. On "Night Beat" on the other hand, all track are great, and a long with "Ain't that Good News" this is really the Sam Cooke original album you ought to have.

Fine informative liner notes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Irresistible!, August 20, 1999
By
Tracy Norris (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rhythm & The Blues (Audio CD)
Rarely do you hear Cooke singing the blues. He's too happy.

Imagine my surprise when he did it his way. You hear Sam in every note, and you wonder how someone can be so versatile.

He hits home with GET YOURSELF ANOTHER FOOL, NOTHING CAN CHANGE THIS LOVE, FOOL'S PARADISE, and BABY WON'T YOU PLEASE COME HOME.

This CD seems to want to pull back with LITTLE GIRL BLUE and a couple of other forgettable tracks.

Even so, this is great music making. You can't go wrong with Cooke. There is so much to like, you may become too attached to one song, before you give the others any play.

This is an album that can be listened to at any time anywhere. Cooke's voice gives you goosebumps as he glides and croons across a landscape of crystal horns and a swinging beat. It's my favorite album of all time. A staple to be taken everywhere, everytime you go.

5.0 out of 5 stars touches my soul, June 15, 1999

Absolutely amazing. Quiet, soulful, timeless. Music that touches your soul and soothes what ails you.

My one-year old son hears this and immediately sighs all his fussiness away and relaxes enough to sleep soundly.

If you love Sam Cooke (which I do), you will ADORE this. Sam Cooke was an amazing talent, who died way too young. And I snatch up everything Sam Cooke I can. This did not disappoint. I could listen to this a billion times, and it would still sound new. Truly amazing. I highly recommend this collection.
