What I was a little disappointed in was that many of the activities use piggy back songs. Those are new words to well known nursery rhymes. Being a music and movement instructor I prefer not using the same melody over and over again for different songs.
I do think this would be a good book for someone with limited music experience working with young kids. I just was hoping for something a little more advanced.
Some of the exercises could be suitable for populations with special needs or in special circumstances, and the resource needs are modest and the materials readily available. The choice and gradation of exercises are impressive. The author, Abigail Flesch Connors, has inherited her late Father's wonderful ability to give a vivid description in a few simple words (compare it with Dr. Rudolf Flesch's 'Why Johnny Can't Read').
Reading the book, I could not help wondering whether, with bereaved, traumatised or abused children who found verbal communication impossible, selected exercises might help establish communication with a trusted adult. For all groups of children, in the course of enjoying the Rocking Rythms, development of social and attentional skills should be promoted by this book, and within appropriately supervised and structured games the exercises might even promote wider development of a child's executive functions.
