5.0 out of 5 stars Janet Rocks! (of course), August 13, 2000
By
I got this video almost 9 years ago (it's been awhile). I mainly wanted it because I had seen some of the videos for the "Rhythm Nation" album on TV before, but not all of them. When I was finally able to watch it (we had to get a new VCR), I was not disappointed. After all these years, this is still my favorite videotape to watch. Every video on it is unique in its own way. From the serious mood of "Rhythm Nation" to the slow jam "Come Back To Me" and the playful "Escapade," you see Janet at her best. My favorite song is "Escapade," and the video compliments it well. "Alright" is simply a tight video. One of my favorites. And who can forget "Love Will Never Do (Without You)"? We got a glimpse of the sexy Janet that we now know today. If you are a Janet fan, and "Rhythm Nation" is your favorite album, then GET THIS TAPE! You will not be disappointed! I still have to get the Design of a Decade and Janet videos, but the Rhythm Nation Compilation definitely satisfies my Janet cravings!

5.0 out of 5 stars Making the best with what you have!, December 31, 2003
Coming behind the coattails of legendary brothers, the youngest Jackson had to carve out her distinctive niche.

And, man, did "Miss Jackson" do just that. Saddled with two of the hottest producers in the business, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jackson released the landmark album "Rhythm Nation 1814" in 1989 and the critics and the public went wild. The platinum-selling album spawned no less than seven hit singles, all with accompanying videos that only added to their success.

This video compilation is the perfect "trip down memory lane" as Jackson and her superb troupe of dancers prance, shimmy, grind, and cavort to the title cut, "Miss You Much", "Love Will Never Do (Without You)", "Alright" (with guest performances from Cyd Charisse, the Nicholas Brothers, Cab Calloway, and Heavy D), "Escapade" with its carnival influences", "Black Cat", "Lonely", and "Come Back to Me" with its Parisian background.

Top-notch direction from Dominec Sena, Peter Smillie, Julian Temple, Wayne Isham and the late Herb Ritts allowed the singer to shine as only she could in each mini-spectacle.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is a rare find, and i'm glad i purchased it, August 23, 2004
This review is from: Rhythm Nation [VHS] (VHS Tape)
OMG!!!!, i can't believe how good this is, i'm bout to go listen to RN again, (LOL) 4real. The plot of the movie was good, the the way the videos were merged, had me thinking back to Michael Jackson's moonwalker. i wish she would've made a video for state of the world. The message from the video was true back then as it is now. i got advice from that tape, that i could put to good use now, about not giving up on what you want to do, nothing is impossible.
Janet, you were and still are the best!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is great, October 30, 2000
This review is from: Rhythm Nation [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The Rhythm Nation video is a 30 minute movie about the meaning of the album, and a remaining 30 minutes about the making of this mini movie. It offers insight about the album, and includes many of the albums songs (Black Cat, Rhythm Nation, Miss You Much, The Knowledge). A must have for fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only Music Video I watch over and over, June 28, 2000
This review is from: Rhythm Nation [VHS] (VHS Tape)
janet. That's saying a mouthful right there. Her videos from Control and Rhythm Nation are her best work. This particular video is very interesting because of the story line interwoven therein. It does not seem overstated, preachy, or judgemental...but still has a serious message. A high point of this video is the chair routine at the end of "Miss You Much" that MTV, BET, and VH1 never show. You will love this video...and you will love the behind-the-scenes portion as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS TAPE IS THE BOMBBBBBBBBBBBBB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1, April 13, 1999

Man when I first watched this tape I was taken by surprise by the way janet had made such a startling performance. Her acting skills were just as beautiful as her brother Michael in his Moonwalker which I own also. Also the choreography was just beautiful(especially in the Rhythm Nation which was very intricate). But my favorite part was Project 1814 which the behind- the-scenes making of it.It was really good to see how dedicated her dancers were especially the beautiful Tina Landon and her other dancer I forgot her name at the moment but I think it's Shawn. As I said it is a good video.

5.0 out of 5 stars WE ARE A PART OF A RHYTHM NATION!, March 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Rhythm Nation [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of the best movies from my childhood. I am a huge Janet Jackson fan. My mother bought me this movie in 1989 and I have had it ever since. I use to remember on weekends I would turn this movie on and I would learn all the dance steps from the movie and I memororixzed all of the dance steps in the movie. The movie was an inspiration for me. I love the choreography of the movie. My favorite dance scenes on the movie are "The Knowledge", "Miss You Much", and "Rhythm Nation". I love the film after the movie called "The making of Rhythm Nation 1814" It was very funny and shows Janet as a supreme dancer. I recommend this movie to all Janet fans. And I recommend this movie to people who want to learn more about Janet's excellent dancing. END

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Concept Album, August 27, 2011
This review is from: Rhythm Nation 1814 (Vinyl)
I am a teacher because of this album.
I am a musician because of this album.

IF YOU'VE NEVER HEARD THIS ALBUM BEFORE BUY IT. THE MESSAGE WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

The musical innovation brought forward by this piece of art certainly gets your attention, but the message makes you listen for years. And for those who truly listen, their lives are changed forever.

Even as a product alone it's shredded everything that's come before or since. Rhythm Nation had more than five #1 hits. The intricate choreography, in the videos, was award winning and ground breaking (no one had ever seen anything like that before). I can not say enough about how one album completely changed my life.

In the end, the album speaks for itself: "we are a nation of no geographic boundaries, bound together through our beliefs, pushing toward a world rid of color lines..." I bring this mantra into my teaching, and life, everyday. This recording, and it's message, is a part of me and an entire generation.

I don't think this record gets enough credit for helping build tolerance and acceptance between people. Put simply it explains that difference is not a deficit, but instead an attribute to be embraced. And, in contrast to the black and white look of the piece, it ironically conveys that nothing in life is simply black or white. Prejudice, Ignorance, Bigotry, Illiteracy, Poverty - all these obstacles can only be conquered by an army of peace. One loving act at a time.

My hope is that Janet's upcoming album (in 2012) will be a comeback like no other. Hopefully, it will draw a lot from the template set forth by Rhythm Nation and give us a sound we've never heard before. But, also allow Janet to bring us through her personal transformations of the past decade (much like Madonna's Ray of Light album). Maybe the lessons Janet's learned, about enduring larger-than-life challenges, will quietly fuel a New Rhythm Nation and slowly revive America's creativity again. If anyone can give us 21st century protest music (laced with R&B, electronic and funk) it's Janet Jackson. It's a tall order, but she needs to again find the strength to make us listen and dance us out of dark times.

Are you still readi...Edit
