Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA--Striking full-color photographs (most are of full-page size) of this journey under the seas should catch the attention of browsers or researchers. Much information accompanies each photo. Sammon describes dives made at diverse times of day in four different reefs throughout the world. While some material on specific animals can be located through the index, it is often necessary to read an entire page of text to find it. The author's primary purpose, magnificently achieved, is to introduce the variety and beauty of the undersea world so that it can be preserved for future generations. The author includes his menu for meals, some camera settings, safety concerns, and his own wonder at the various sights. The first-person narrative makes readers feel as though they are actually viewing this exquisite world. The last chapter and the two appendixes present the ecological status of reefs around the world and ways individuals can get involved through conservation organizations and photography. A beautiful book with an important message.

From Library Journal

Sammon (Seven Underwater Wonders of the World, LJ 10/15/92) travels the tropical seas to provide a photographic exploration of coral landscapes and the animals that inhabit them. Some 120 high-quality color reproductions reveal a world of dazzlingly beautiful fish, anemones, corals, and sponges. Interesting comparison photos of fish showing sexual phases, night- vs. day-color differences, and camouflaging patterns are of particular interest. However, the text provides little that is not readily available from other sources. Missing details about the taking of each photograph will disappoint underwater photography enthusiasts. Information on the natural history of the marine organisms pictured is scant and drawn from other sources, while the author's firsthand experiences are not unique and are rarely captivating. The photographs will entertain browsers and impress those fascinated with underwater habitats, but collections already owning books on coral reefs such as The Greenpeace Book of Coral Reefs (LJ 11/15/92) will not benefit from this additional purchase. For young adult and general collections.
