Book Description

January 15, 2010
Rhythmic Designs expands on the groundbreaking polyrhythmic, polymetric concepts covered in Harrison's previously published Rhythmic Illusions, Rhythmic Visions and Rhythmic Horizons books and videos by offering detailed analysis and transcriptions of twenty drum tracks from the recent Gavin Harrison and 05Ric albums Drop and Circles (featuring guitarist Robert Fripp and keyboardists Dave Stewart and Gary Sanctuary). Along with the 204-page book of note-for-note transcriptions and practice exercises, the double-sided companion DVD features more than two-and-a-half hours of video packed with descriptions and discussions of the drum parts, set-ups, tuning and recording process - plus six minus-drums, play-along tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable material for Drummers, October 4, 2010

This review is from: Rhythmic Designs: A Study of Practical Creativity (Paperback)
This book is a invaluable material as Gavin explains in a clear concise and simple as running their different rhythms and fills in its two major albums "Drop" and "Circles." Obviously it is a book for more advanced drummers who get the tracks exactly as presented to us by Gavin I think we understand how the arm achieves its themes, such as works and creates a polyrhythm drum fill and odd times signatures. The play alongs are also a great contribution of this book because these can practice everything as studied in this book. The video quality is excellent and it shows in detail how to run their drums fills and rhythmic patterns.

5.0 out of 5 stars A goldmine, June 9, 2011

This review is from: Rhythmic Designs: A Study of Practical Creativity (Paperback)
This is intended for people who really want to get into Gavin's head. He's personally my idol. If you've previously purchased Gavin's Rhythmic illusions and perspectives this is a great book to show you how he actually applied all his concepts with 05 Ric. If you haven't bought these books, BUY THEM NOW ! you don't know what you're missing .. This is not a concept book, like I said, it's a note by note transcription of what Gavin played on 05 ric's 2 albums Drop and circles. The DVD shows Gavin giving you some sort of in depth explanations of what seems to be a " tricky part " in few of the songs.
I loved how, these albums were produced by Gavin and 05 ric, they just went crazy and hammered down what they thought was convenient. If you're looking to introduce a fellow drummer/musician to Gavin harrison, you just definitely consider making him/her listen to his contributions in the albums Drop or Circles. Much more interesting that Porcupine tree's drum lines :P

What I didn't like about the play Alongs was that there were a lot of songs I was looking forward to cover that weren't included there. There was just a few from each album.

oh one more thing, this is NOT a book for beginners nor intermediate drummers. It's demotivating to attempt and play the songs if you're still a beginner. I strongly recommend you buy Gavin's books ( mentioned above ) and take your time in grasping his methods.

Hope this helps.
