From Booklist

Brynn Halsted, prima ballerina for her Harlem dance troop, is living her dream when a premonition has her waiting for a catastrophe. She takes extra precautions, because she believes that if she couldn't dance, her life would be ruined. In fact, her sense of identity is so intertwined with her dancing, she's made little time for a personal life. Enter Simeon Storey, jazz club owner and composer, who has unfinished music for Brynn that he hasn't worked on for years because he believes she dissed him after a performance. They clear the air and start getting to know each other, but Brynn is brutally attacked at Simeon's club. Suddenly her career is over. Simeon and Brynn's friends and family all try to be supportive, but it is ultimately up to Brynn to accept the changes in her life and to take a chance at happiness. The modern Harlem renaissance is well represented by these two complex and talented characters, making this an extraordinary romance with broad appeal. Patty Engelmann

4.0 out of 5 stars Dancing to Their own Rhythm, May 12, 2003

Brynn Halstead, a dancing diva finds herself drawn to Simeon Storey, a jazz musician, club owner and accomplished composer. Having met briefly years before, they meet again working through their misunderstandings and begin looking forward to a possible future. When Brynn suffers a possible career ending tragedy that leaves her broken in a thousand pieces, Simeon is right there to pick up the pieces, never anticipating that trying to piece together something so fragile may further pull them apart.

When I picked up this book I was in the mood for romance and that is exactly what I got. Doris Johnson created a heroine that one could empathize with and hero that every woman would want. However Ms. Johnson takes the proverbial saying "when it rains it pours" to a new level. I became a bit overwhelmed in all the obstacles faced by the characters. Nonetheless, the passion shown for their dreams and each other was infectious and the tragedy, recovery and discovery of oneself that our heroine goes through, distinguishes this from other romances that I have read. I found it enjoyable and definitely a recommendable read. And can I add that I would love to have this man in my life.

4.0 out of 5 stars A dance of love, November 17, 2002
By
The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rhythms Of Love (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
From the time she was seven years old, dancing consumed Brynn
Halsted's life. Dancing for her was like being in love for the
first time, and being loved back. At sixteen, a day after the
death of her father, she displayed a toughness that belied her
years as she executed a performance that propelled her into stardom.

Simeon Storey, a fresh, young, up and coming pianist once played
for Brynn and was so mesmerized by her performance, he waited
anxiously in the wings to meet her and share his dreams of
writing a score just for her. But as Brynn passed she just
looked right through him.

Four years later fate has again placed Simeon in Brynn's path.
A devastating attack has injured Brynn's body and spirit. Simeon
may be the only one to challenge her to recover her self worth.
He valiantly tries to shelter Brynn as she faces one tumultuous
pirouette after another. Brynn is on a path of self-discovery
and Simeon is finding the courage to trust in love again.

Ms. Johnson has written an endearing story about triumph and
tragedy, set in Harlem, reminiscent of the Renaissance era. This
is a Contemporary Romance, but this story clearly shows that life
is not all fluff. That when two people are trying to build a
romance, the issue of personality flaws must still be faced and
concessions must be made.
