Book Description

A group of frogs are living happily in a peaceful pond, until they discover a surprise visitor: a little pink pig. Sitting contentedly on a rock in the middle of their pond, the pig opens his mouth and says: RIBBIT! The frogs are bewildered at first, and then a bit annoyed—"What did that little pig just say?", "Does he think he's a frog?", "Is he making fun of us?"

Soon the pig draws the attention of all the nearby animals; everyone is curious to know what he wants! After much guessing (and shouting) and a visit to the wise old beetle, the animals realize that perhaps the pig was not there to mock them afterall—maybe he just wanted to make new friends!  But is it too late?  This is a warm, funny, and beautifully illustrated story of friendship, with boisterous RIBBIT!s throughout—perfect for reading aloud.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A family of frogs have no idea why there’s a pig sitting on a rock in their pond, saying “Ribbit!” “Does he think he’s a frog? Is he making fun of us?” they ask. News of the pig-frog travels fast, and soon a raccoon, a turtle, and a weasel have arrived to witness the curiosity for themselves. With no more than “Ribbits” of explanation from the pig, the animals seek the council of a wise beetle; but when the beetle, who can’t travel all that quickly, arrives back at the pond, the rock is empty. “Maybe,” he says, “the pig just wanted to make new friends.” Sure enough, our little pink pig has up and moved to a tree nearby, perched with the birds, and is practicing his “Tweet!” This is a sweet story about friendship, but it’s Bernatene’s illustrations of heavily textured and hugely expressive animals that are a joy. The frogs in particular charm, with their growing outrage expressed in skinny crossed arms and lolling eyeballs. Get ready to “Ribbit” at friendship-themed story hours. Preschool-Grade 1. --Ann Kelley

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable March 26, 2013
Format:Hardcover
Ribbit! Is the story of a family of frogs that live in a pond. One day they find a surprise, a pig! All the pig will say is "Ribbit!" Is the pig confused? Is he making fun of the frogs? Maybe all of the animals that live nearby can figure out what is going on. Trying to figure it out might actually cause some problems with all of the animals. Thankfully the wise old beetle should be able to figure it all out. Then again, figuring out the problem is pretty difficult when you can't find the frog. Where will he turn up next? I don't want to spoil the ending, because it is extra special. It shows how it is okay to think outside of the box or branch out to others you might not normally be friends with. It's totally okay to be different!

The illustrations in this picture book are sweet. I like the colors. I love that the pig's nose is a heart on many of the pages. Even the words look cute (I love the font). It is slightly long to read in story time at the library where I work, but I think it is just cute enough to work anyway. There aren't too many words per page, and the story is pretty captivating. It even has humor. The fact that there is a good moral to the story makes it even better. I really can't wait to share it with 3 to 5 year olds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun to read aloud and with toddler April 7, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I love this book and so does my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter. She will take the book and "read" it on her own. She knows when to read "Ribbit". The book gives the adult a chance to discuss how the pig wanted to make friends. People want to make friends too,but sometimes they are ignored because they look different. Very good book to read aloud for children 2-9.

My Review

This adorable book took a creative twist when a pig decides to be a frog. The book reminds me of others that I have read that are similar in style such as A Porcupine named Fluffy. This is a very cute book with wonderful illustrations, especially in the faces of the animals A simple but profound theme is found throughout the book of friendship, fitting in and acceptance.

The book makes good use of water-color, and has plenty of simple words that your kids and read along with you and very delightful group of creatures are found throughout. Would recommend this book for ages 2-7.

If you are looking for a book for your child or grandchild, this is your book. I just got this lovely book and I couldn't recommend it more. It is beautifully illustrated, brilliantly written with humor that young and old will love, and has a moral story at the foundation that we could all learn a life lesson from.

4.0 out of 5 stars This pond's for frogs only! June 21, 2013
By Coach A
Format:Hardcover
The pond is frog territory. It's their happy home, and they are thrown for a loop when they find a little pink pig sitting on a rock in their pond. Not only is the little pink pig in their pond on their rock, the pig doesn't oink like regular pigs. This pig says, "Ribbit!" The frogs are quite flummoxed. "Does he think he's a frog?" "Is he making fun of us?" They don't know what to do. But something must be done, right? The other animals are curious about the frogs' new pink relative, laughing at the frogs which, of course, makes the frogs angry. After a big to-do with much shouting, the animals decide to take the matter to the wise old beetle, leaving the little pink pig sitting lonely on the rock. "Ribbit?"

When the animals return with the wise old beetle, the pig is nowhere to be found. "Maybe, he just wanted to make new friends", the wise old beetle harrumphs. The frogs hadn't thought of that. Undeterred the little pink pig tries again; maybe the birds will be friendlier.

Some of my favorite picture books were first published internationally, and now I will add Ribbit! to my list of favorite international picture books. Ribbit! uses humor and a cast of cute, colorful, and curious animals and an insightful beetle to comment on friendship and hospitality. I also can add Argentine illustrator, Pony Bernatene, to my list of favorites. His style in this book is cartoony with pencil-thin outlines filled with vivid colors, and traces of collage for the pond flora. His animals are expressive with the frogs conveying surprise and confusion, anger, and remorse.

This is a perfect read aloud that you'll enjoy sharing with children ages three to seven.
