More About the Author

Author, teacher, fabric designer, and award-winning quiltmaker, Nancy Mahoney has enjoyed making quilts for over twenty-five years, during which time an impressive range of her beautiful quilts have been featured in many books and in over 110 national and international quilt magazines.

Nancy has authored thirteen books since 2002, all have been published by Martingale. Her bestselling books include Appliqué Quilt Revival (2008), Ribbon Star Quilts (2008), Quilt Revival (2006), Treasures for the 30s (2010) and Fast, Fusible Flower Quilts (2011), Kaleidoscope Paper-Piecing (2012), and Simple Circles and Quick Curves (2013).

Nancy enjoys combining traditional blocks and updated techniques to create dazzling quilts. Not considering herself a specialist in one particular area, Nancy's favorite techniques include precision machine piecing, quilt design, and machine appliqué.

When she's not designing and making quilts, Nancy enjoys traveling to guilds and events around the country, sharing her quilts, teaching her piecing and machine appliqué techniques, and visiting gardens.

Stars seem to be a popular theme for quilts in 2007 and 2008. Ms. Mahoney's book, RIBBON STAR QUILTS, provide you five beautiful star quilts to keep you busy.

The first section gives instructions on making the basic block used in her Ribbon pattern. Then each project has a color photo of the finished quilt, along with a materials list and cutting chart. This cutting chart makes it so easy to follow which fabric, the number needed, the size to cut and what that piece will be used for. I wish more patterns were written with this type of chart.

Lots of diagrams are included in the instructions for making the blocks. The finishing of each quilt is left up to the maker's own tastes although a quilt pattern is provided if you wish to use it. A second color way is shown at the end of the project. You can read about the author at the end of the book.

With the basic block provided in this book, you can make dozens of wonderful star quilts from you own stash of fabrics. Let your imagination go wild.

This book is short, with only one basic pattern, but nice options available for making it. If you want to make the cover pattern, the book is worth it. If you are looking for a book with more than this pattern, go onto another book. I liked it, but was a bit disappointed in finding out only one quilt was in it.

I find the quilts in this book very visual entertaining. When you break down the block it is quite a simple concept, but I found it to be very well thought out. I was a bit disappointed to find that all the quilts are essentially the same pattern, but as I read the book again, I began to see how the subtle differences in strip width made a big impact in the quilt design. Probably too easy for an experienced quilter, but I got a lot of ideas from it and plan to use it soon. Worth having at a good price, too!
