If You Want Your Kids to Love Reading.....,
By
This review is from: Ribsy (Avon Camelot Books) (Paperback)
Like one of the other posters, I was introduced to this book when my 4th grade teacher (Mrs. Evelyn Smith, thank you wherever you are) would read a chapter apiece to us every day after lunch. We were awed into suspence, wondering if poor old Ribsy would ever find his way home. So I later bought the book and occasionally read it to my nephews and nieces nearly 30 years later. If you want your kids to love reading, I suggest that you buy this, read a chapter a night before bedtime, and soon they will want to read it themselves to find out what hapened next. May God Bless the memory of Bevery Cleary.

Our teacher read this to us in the 5th grade and I never forgot it. I loved it so much I bought my own copy with my allowance and read it again-twice. Now I buy it for all my cousins, nieces and nephews and my friends children and they love it, too. It lead me to read the other wonderful stories by Cleary which I also highly recommend.

Ribsy gets into the wrong car at a shopping center, and soon finds himself lost, far away from Henry Huggins and no idea of how to get home. He undergoes a series of adventures, almost all of them related to encounters with people from different walks of life who treat him in different ways. A desperate Henry keeps searching, but as time passes, it seems that the two might never be reunited.
This is a very different book for Cleary. Not only is she writing about things from Ribsy's perspective, but she also wanders into the homes of several people who are fundamentally different from wholesome Huggins and Quimby families. Letting us see people who want to use Ribsy for their own ends gives us a glimpse into human nature that doesn't come through in the Ramona books. These differences make this book stand out from the other Cleary books, and I really enjoyed it as a child. There are some quirky and imaginative adventures in store for Ribsy, and it's easy to get invested in the desires of the dog and the boy, who just want to find each other and be happy together. This is one of the best books from among Cleary's early work, and I recommend it for anyone who might not be interested in her other books.

In my opinion, this is one of Cleary's finest.
I first got into it when my 2nd grade teacher read it to our class. It is about a dog, Ribsy, who is very much loved by his owner Henry Huggins. He climbs out of his family's car in a shopping mall parking lot and decides to do a bit of exploring. He then decides he wants to go back to the family car and go home, but he can't identify the car. He tries to find his way back home, but can't find the way. Many people take him into their homes but he is never content to stay. Kids who own pets of their own will be able to relate to Henry's sadness over his missing dog, and his determination to find him no matter what. The illustrations are adorable.

My 7 year old grandson and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Ribsy while driving. In fact my grandson would beg me to stay in the parked car once we were home so he could continue to listen. Of course I couldn't do that because I had to know what was happening next to Ribsy also. It's a delightful story for both young and slightly older ears.

Super Book for Kids,
This review is from: Ribsy (Avon Camelot Books) (Paperback)
Ribsy is a delightful story about a dog who gets lost and finds himself full of adventures while trying to get back to Henry. This was our bedtime story and I would end at each adventure...my son was ready for bed each night so he could find out what was happening with Ribsy. He loved it and your children will love it too! Beverly Cleary is just a brillant writer and she knows exactly how to make children curious along the way.

Attention Animal Lovers...
By: Sienna Compton Do you like great stories about animals? If so, you should read "Ribsy" by Beverly Cleary. It's a great adventure about a dog that gets lost, and travels on his own back home. When you read this book, you will feel like you're there, watching everything happen. The story begins when Henry Huggins's family and their dog Ribsy head to the shopping center in their new station wagon. They get out to go shopping and leave Ribsy in the car. He accidently pushes the button that rolls down the window with his paw. The next thing Ribsy knew, he was getting out of the car looking for Henry Huggins. Ribsy, who was an old and colorblind dog, saw a brand new-looking station wagon that seemed the same color as the Huggins's car. He got in. When the wrong family opened the car doors and piled in, he was very confused. As soon as the family was home, they had decided to keep the dog so they were going to give him a bath. Ribsy decided to escape, and quick. Ribsy also met a women living on the side of the highway as he was traveling along. She took care of him until she made him do tricks and wear funny looking clothes around her friends. Ribsy was off to another home. Ribsy had gone to school to play with children, but this did not work because he just ended up chasing some kid's squirrel. He also tried sneaking home with a young boy after going to a football game but again he just ran away on a search for Henry Huggins. If you would like to find out the ending, you will have to read this book. My favorite part of the story is the beginning when Henry, his family, and Ribsy are going to the shopping center. When they get there, Henry and his family go and shop and leave Ribsy behind in the car. Ribsy accidently pushed the button that rolls down the window with his paw. Ribsy hopped out of the car on a search for Henry Huggins. After Ribsy had gotten tired of looking for Henry and also barking and sniffing other dogs, Ribsy decided to look for his family's car. I learned from reading this book that having a dog, even a silly mutt like Ribsy, is a great honor. I know since I have a dog that dogs aren't just silly pets that you have to feed but they can be your friends too. I would give this book 41/2 stars. I hope you decide to read this wonderful book! (:

The Huggins family had just got a brand new shiny, clean, green car, and Mrs. Huggins wants to keep it that way, so Ribsy has not had one ride in it. One day the family hopped into the car to go to the shopping center and Ribsy chases the car until they let him get into the car. The family heads into the shopping center leaving Ribsy behind in the car, He spots a tiny Yapping dog and hops out the window to chase after it getting himself hopelessly lost in the huge parking lot. For a Long time he searches for the car until he sees a brand new, Shiny, Clean, Red car, Ribsy ( being colorblind) he hops into the car and when he wakes up he is surrounded by girls. They end up taking him home and giving him a bubble bath. He escapes and goes on many more adventures including living with old Mrs. Frawley, staying in a childrens classroom, playing in a football game, going to a boy named joes house, and going down a fire escape at a hotel. He ends up back in henrys car and on the way home
I liked this book and i recommend it and the other Beverly Cleary books. |
