This review is from: Rice Rhapsody (DVD)
This Singapore-made movie is produced by Jackie Chan. The main character is played by veteran Zhang Ai Jia who is prominent in the Asian region as an actress, director, and producer. The story premise is where she's a single mother with three sons and her livelihood is running a restaurant famous for its signature dish of Hainan Chicken Rice. Her best friend/soul mate happens to be running a rival restaurant nearby and who is infatuated with her the whole time. It so happens that both her children are gay (a rather bold subject for conservative Singapore) and she's hoping that her youngest and her most doting son would be a straight so that she would be a grandmother someday. The first half of the movie is rather light-hearted where the mother is trying to ascertain if the youngest son is straight or otherwise, looking for a plausible way to get him excited with the opposite sex. Then, her soul mate decides to get a female exchange student to stay with the family considering that French women are known for their ohlala skill. The French girl happens to be a free spirit and her presence enables them to confront themselves and one another to decide if conformity is the solution of going against the grain. The ending is for you to find out. A rather well-made movie and it has been nominated and won various international film awards. Commendable watching.
