Editorial Reviews

Raven presents the definitive, multi-label hit collection of the great Country artist CHARLIE RICH. A Rich Collection 1960-1978 compiles 27 of his finest recordings drawn from his years with Sun, Groove, Smash, RCA and Epic Records. Known as The Silver Fox, Rich was one the great Country stars of the 1960s and 1970s, becoming best known for his string of lush, Billy Sherrill-produced countrypolitan hits of the mid-70s. Not only was he one of the best selling artists in modern Country (with nine #1 hits), but also he scored a #1 cross-over hit on the Billboard Pop chart as well. Throughout his career Rich has been able to blend country, jazz, blues, gospel, rockabilly and soul into a winning formula. Starting with his first rockabilly hit Lonely Weekends', produced in 1960 by Sam C. Phillips, this collection proceeds through his foot-stomping 1963 hit on Groove Big Boss Man', his 1965 Top 40 Pop hit on Smash Mohair Sam' and on to his amazing run of #1s during the 1970s on Epic. These include Behind Closed Doors', The Most Beautiful Girl', A Very Special Love Song', There Won't Be Any More', I Don't See Me In Your Eyes Anymore', I Love My Friend', Rollin' with the Flow' and On My Knees'. In addition there are a further five Top 10 hits and four that made the Top 50 - making 20 chart hits in total - plus a selection of key B-sides and quality album tracks. With 27 tracks, 75 minutes of superb quality audio, detailed liner notes and color booklet this is an essential collection for the Country music aficionado.

Over the course of his rich musical career, Charlie Rich was a man who dabbled in musical genres the way a chameleon changes colors. But at the very roots of his singing was an indisputable feeling for knowing what lives in our souls. Raven Records has a knack for reissuing the best of musical artists, and "A Rich Anthology 1960-1978", is another exemplary example. This reissue contains twenty-seven classic and memorable tracks recorded during an eighteen year stretch with many of these tracks certain to rekindle listeners' memories and appreciation. Great songs.

Had Raven extended their span of his recording years to include recordings post 1978, this CD could have captured Rich's most profoundly self-searching and soulful recordings, his quintessential and unadulterated tracks from his album, "Pictures and Paintings".

This 1992 album contains music as close to a man's intimate being as an artist can achieve, and from Rich's perspective, an album that captures his existential essence as an artist.

Listen to his prophetic and soul wrenching, "Feel Like Going Home", and you'll hear, and be made conscious of the man's inner self and circumstance.
From Rich's understated piano introduction to the chorus' plaintive plea at the end, we know this track is far more than just the final song; it's more a picture and painting of what lived in his soul during those vexing years during the early 1990s.

Unfortunately, none of his songs from this stellar, self-introspective album were included. Had Raven done so, their efforts and collection would have exceeded five stars and would have made for a personally "Richer" listening experience.

In 1997 SONY released "The Essential Charlie Rich", a collection containing 27 of his finest songs. 2 great CD's, but not a greatest hits collection. The anthology from Raven Records also have 27 songs, and here you get Charlie's greatest country and pop hits: every Top 10 country hits, including the nine # 1's, and the top 40 pop hits. But the Raven collection also contains many great songs that not were hits. 10 of the songs are both on the SONY and the RAVEN collections, 17 on only one of them. In other words, these two collections together give you 44 great songs. Like other CD's from Australian Raven Records, the sound quality is superb. So I can just say: buy this CD and enjoy! The CD's liner notes says that Charlie Rich is currently playing way below his true weight in the pantheon of American music of the 20th century. Yes, that's right. Charlie Rich was a great singer, a great musician and a great song-writer.

My copy of SONY's 1997 "The Essential Charlie Rich", is a collection containing 36 songs, not the 27 that another reviewer cites. A Rich Anthology 1960-1978 is the latest Charlie Rich collection, it has 27 tracks and contains 13 not on "The Essential" including the soul masterpiece "Woman Left Lonely" by Spooner Oldham and Dan Penn. The Essential's 36 tracks include 22 not on this collection including another soul masterpiece, "When Something is Wrong with My Baby". The Sound on the 14 tracks that these two collections share is a little punchier on this one. Which ever collection you choose, you should track down the tracks that I have singled out, they really are as essential as anything else in Charlie's catalog.

I think you have to be old enough to remember, but oooooh those warm sensual tones. You don't have to be "country" to enjoy Charlie. He's for any age. A Very Special Love Song alone is worth the purchase!!!

If you like Charlie Rich and don't have any of his music, then this is a great way to cover most of best music with one CD. You really won't be disappointed.
