4.0 out of 5 stars A polished but sadly unrecognized jewel, February 14, 2010
By
Nev Daimler (West Yorkshire, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rich Don't Rock (Audio CD)
I was fortunate enough to go see this band in 1989 in a small pub in Leicester(UK), purely from having read the favourable review of this album in Kerrang! a couple of weeks earlier. Vamp were hugely entertaining and, as is common with small bands, keen to talk to their audience before and after the gig. having witnessed such an enjoyable show, I went and bought this album and was and still am thoroughly impressed. It's not full-blown hair metal in the vein of Ratt/Poison etc, nor does it have the sleaze of Crue/Pussycat; the European roots give it a more polished, poppy sound that hints at Europe, but I say that cautiously because Vamp are far more hard hitting. The tunes are catchy but very hard rock.
There are highlights - storming opener Heartbreak/Heartache, the thumping title track, the power ballad, Renegade and the rather camp Lonely Nights. But as a whole this album works extremely well. Proof? Well here I am twenty years later on a Sunday evening and I'm writing this because I got the sudden urge to slap the album on my turntable and have a blast. It's charm has never faded through two decades. If you're a fan of 80s hard rock/metal, you're lucky enough to have come across this review and you're even luckier to find a copy of this album, please buy it. You won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive German melodic rock album, June 30, 2006
This review is from: Rich Don't Rock (Audio CD)
1989's The Rich Don't Rock was the debut album from German melodic rock band Vamp. I ran across this gem at the local used CD store and picked it up based entirely on the album cover, thinking it was a Hollywood "hair metal" band. It turns out Vamp had a more polished sound than you might expect. Vamp was very similar to their countrymen Bonfire, but they also had similarities to bands like Britny Fox, King Kobra and maybe Europe. It's an interesting mix of fast-paced hard rock and polished AOR, and it works pretty well.

The Rich Don't Rock was Vamp's only album. As far as I've been able to find, this was the only album these guys ever worked on, together or separately. It's a shame, because they played this kind of music really well. Then again, this kind of music didn't end up popular for much longer. If you're a serious fan of the `80s era melodic rock sound, Vamp is well worth checking out. Unfortunately The Rich Don't Rock is a pretty tough album to track down. It would be nice to see a remastered reissue at some point.

The track listing is as follows:

1. Heartbreak, Heartache
2. Like I Want
3. the Rich Don't Rock
4. Love Games
5. Renegade
6. All Nite
7. Lonely Nights
8. Stand By Me
9. Bleeding
10. Talk is Cheap
11. Shout
12. Why
