When you buy a monograph on an artist, you want lots of large scale, color images of his most important works. This new book definitely delivers.

The introductory essays are excellent, informative and original, as you would expect given the authors. Much like the previous book on Diebenkorn's years in Albuquerque, what you will particularly enjoy in this book are the excellent reproductions of these exciting and lesser known paintings. The artist had a wonderful focus on color throughout his career (to be expected, given his acknowledged influence by Matisse) and we see his abstract work really develop during his years in Berkeley.

Diebenkorn's style continued to evolve during this period and, after a few tentative steps via works new to me, at least, the book shows the artist's shift into his figurative period. Of course, following his move to teach at UCLA he eventually developed his mature, abstract Ocean Park style which continued for the remainder of his career. There are numerous books focusing on his Ocean Park work and briefly covering his Berkeley years, but this is the first significant monograph dealing exclusively with this exciting period. I found the third essay, comparing his airplane snapshots of the ground from 30,000 feet to his later paintings, particularly interesting.

A valuable addition to the Diebenkorn oeuvre and a bargain at Amazon's price.

I am an artist so my views are from that perspective. I bought this particular book to gain an added insight to abstract art from an artist (Diebenkorn) who had difficulty deciding between this expression (his best legacy) and reproductive art as he defined this alternative expression as readily visible forms from nature or the human condition. His early West coast style was so accepted by critics as among the better examples of abstract art, that when he left that expression after several long years as the iconic artist from the West coast, the abstract community in general was appalled by this abrupt change; some had a negative view of him later, when he returned full time to abstract expressions. I wanted to understand what made him change and what was the forces that drove him to stop one and start the other and return again? This book offered that learning and I appreciated the commentary of the critics at the time that followed him. I believe that his early style of abstract expression came so easy to him that he apparently tired of the rapid ease it which it was rendered and challenged his desire to try something different that he was also so very good at...drawing figures.

regardless of the naysayers who claim to have stalked the earth to view the originals and find the reproductions within lacking, this volume delivers a concise and cohesive exploration of this period in Diebenkorn's paintings to be found NOWHERE else, pending his catalogue raisonne. The studio photos, too, are engaging. My singular criticism is the repetition of the essays, which cannot remind one enough that the California School of Fine Arts evolved into the San Francisco Art Institute. A bit more polish to the editorial process among the essays would have supported the brilliance of the paintings to 5+ stars.

This is a good book about an amazing exhibit. Having seen the paintings themselves just today, I can state definitively that the color reproductions in this book don't even come close to doing the paintings justice. The color looks washed out and the definition is weak. There are other Diebenkorn monographs available that reproduce most of this work far better. Unfortunately there are works in this show that can't be found in any other book. This is my personal favorite period of Diebenkorn's career, and the show itself exceeded my expectations. The color reproductions in this book are a serious disappointment.

I saw the exhibition at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco and wanted the catalog ever since. I may not be able to have one of Diebenkorn's paintings in my home, but a book filled with beautiful plates and in-depth information about his years in Berkeley will be a nice addition to my library. Years from now I'll be able to open this book up and remember what an excellent exhibition I saw at the museum.

Richard Diebenkorn: The Berkely Years poor illustrations
The color illustrations of the paintings are very poor. They are dull and printed darker in the Amazon version. The copy that is for sale at the Museum of Modern Art is splendid. For instance, the reds in the paintings look dark maroon in the Amazon version. I tried to return it but Amazon said that I missed my window of opportunity to return. Save your money or order version from MOMA

I bought this gift for an artist and he was very pleased and excited about the quality of the prints in this book. He had seen many of Diebenkorn's works before and there were new ones here that surprised him! I stumbled upon this book by accident when I was searching for works in museums by him! I was sad to see that this beautiful retrospective was shown only in San Francisco and Palm Springs, and would have loved to have seen it in New York. This book was hard to get, but of course Amazon came through! If you can find it...it will be worth it! Love it!
