Arquitecto y doctor arquitecto (ETSAM) con la máxima calificación. Tras obtener el DEA, se halla elabotrando una tesis doctoral en la Facultad de Filosofía, UCM. Ha sido evaluado positivamente como Profesor contratado doctor y Profesor de universidad privada por la ANECA y su actividad docente evaluada "excelente" en el programa Docentia.

Ha sido profesor de doctorado (ETSAM) y de Elementos de Composición en San Pablo-CEU.

Investiga sobre filosofía y proyecto de arquitectura desde un pensamiento postmetafísico y desde una actitud de resistencia. Ha publicado en diferentes medios (Arquitectura, Iluminaciones, Metalocus, Despalabro...) y ha presentado sus investigaciones en diversos foros internacionales (Knowing by Designing en Bruselas, EURAU12 en Oporto, Alvar Aalto Conference en Jyvaskyla, Educating Architects Towards Innovative Architecture en Estambul, Icomos/CaH 20THC en Madrid, Un|Planbar: Agora und Void en Dresde, entre otros) con publicaciones de los mismos.

En 2010 editó el libro (de)gustaciones gratuitas, traducido en 2012 al portugués y ha publicado otro libro sobre la arquitectura de Richard Neutra.

Es miembro fundador de Intersección (Grupo de investigación de filosofía y arquitectura), miembro de la ESA (European Society of Aesthetics) y ha sido investigador en el proyecto Espacio y subjetividad: ampliaciones y quiebras de lo subjetivo en la ciudad contemporánea, concedido por el Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia. Es evaluador externo para la revista DC papers.

Mantiene estudio profesional en Madrid habiendo sido premiado en numerosos concursos y habiendo construido diferente obra resultado de los mismos. Ha colaborado como arquitecto en los estudios de Santiago Calatrava, Aranguren&Gallegos y Matos/Castillo.

José Vela Castillo is a trained architect and Ph.D. architect (ETSAM) currently working on a Ph.D. in Philosophy (Faculty of Philosophy, UCM). He has been positively evaluated by ANECA in the Teaching Staff Evaluation Programme.
He taught as visiting professor in the Doctorate program at ETSAM, and has been professor of design studio at CEU-San Pablo University.

His research interests are focused on philosophy, theory and the project of architecture, from a post-metaphysical and critical stance. His work has appeared in different journals (Arquitectura, Iluminaciones, Metalocus, Despalabro...), and has also been presented at and published following a variety of international conferences (Knowing by Designing in Brussels, Theory by Design in Antwerpen, EURAU12 in Porto, Alvar Aalto Conference in Jyvaskyla, Educating Architects Towards Innovative Architecture in Istanbul, Icomos/CaH 20THC in Madrid, Un|Planbar: Agora und Void in Dresden...).

In 2010 his book "(de)gustaciones gratuitas" on Derrida and Mies van der Rohe (translated in 2012 to Portuguese) was published. He is also the author of a book on the work of architect Richard Neutra.

Vela Castillo is a founding member of Intersección (Research Group on Philosophy and Architecture, www.interseccion.info), and of ESA (European Society of Aesthetics) and has been a researcher in the project Space and Subjectivity, funded by the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia. He is an external evaluator for the journal DC papers.

His professional practice has been located in Madrid since 1992.
