Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"This selection of Nixon documents is excellent, as is Rick Perlstein's introduction. It gets Nixon right, and it identifies the defining themes of his life and career."--David Greenberg, Rutgers University, author of Nixon's Shadow: The History of an Image

"Rick Perlstein's Nixon anthology is extremely impressive. Given that Nixon wrote or heavily edited most of his speeches, this collection of representative statements not only sheds much light on Nixon's long public life but it also reveals much about his multifaceted personality. And Perlstein's introduction and notes are insightful and balanced."--Timothy Naftali, author of Blind Spot: The Secret History of American Counterterrorism

This is a very useful book for the serious Nixon scholar. The bulk of the material consists of primary sources in which Nixon expresses his own thoughts.

Perlstein's commentaries reveal his obvious and absolute hatred for Nixon, and readers should be wary of his analysis, unless you're only interested in a Nixon-is-Evil argument. For example, Perlstein accuses Nixon of somehow "blackmailing" EISENHOWER regarding Ike's own financial misdeeds in the "Checkers Speech," but offers no proof and cites no source.

The documents themselves are obviously free from Perlstein's jaundiced touch, and they alone constitute the book's academic value. This is the only book by Perlstein on ANY subject that is worth buying, largely because his commentary is limited.

I definitely found this book useful for my research project as it allowed me to look at the text of several different speeches and writings that were relevant to my research topic.
