Book Description

February 17, 2009 Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art

Only twenty-five at the time of his death in 1828, young Richard Parkes Bonington nevertheless was a seminal figure in the development of modernism in nineteenth-century French painting. This catalogue raisonné of his oil and watercolor paintings represents the first attempt to establish and present the artist’s complete known oeuvre. Drawing on 25 years of research, Patrick Noon catalogues, analyzes, and reproduces 400 artworks now indisputably attributed to Bonington. Many of these paintings have never before been published.

The book sets Bonington’s achievement in the context of the intellectual, social, and artistic ferment of high romanticism in Paris and London, and it shows the profound effect of his style on his friend and contemporary, Eugène Delacroix, and many others. Noon’s detailed and accurate study will inform all future discourse on Bonington and his remarkable legacy.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-28) was a brilliant landscape watercolorist who produced more than 400 paintings and drawings during his short life. Born in England, Bonington moved to France with his family in 1817, where he was introduced to Eugène Delacroix and studied with Baron Gros. His work drew praise from critics and influenced romantic and naturalist painters in both France and England. There has never been a reliable catalog of Bonington's oeuvre to support art historians' study of him. His work was widely copied and forged, which led to many misattributions. Fortunately, Noon (Patrick & Aimee Butler Chair of Paintings and Modern Sculpture, Minneapolis Inst. of Arts) has devoted several decades to researching Bonington and his work; his definitive catalogue raisonné contains 380 color and 60 black-and-white illustrations, plus a biographical essay on Bonington, a chronology of his life, two bibliographies, and detailed indexes. The book's scholarly focus and high price make it most appropriate for art history and museum libraries.—Martha Smith, Elmira Coll. Lib., NY

This review is from: Richard Parkes Bonington: The Complete Paintings (Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art) (Hardcover)
We've been waiting for Patrick Noon to get to this book for some time -- the heroic effort of the Constable to Delacroix exhibition was a few years ago -- and at last he's done it! Bonington is still under-regarded as a painter (watercolourists, you know; and also he died at 25). But he is perhaps the most ravishing watercolourist ever: everything he did makes one swoon. It made Delacroix swoon -- and anything that contributed to Delacroix's watercolours, the ones of Morocco being among the greatest watercolours ever, in my opinion, but I digress -- is worth hunting out) it will do the same for you. Bonington's influence was pervasive: I particularly relish the Francia-Bonington-Isabey-Boudin-Monet thread. But there are so many others. Every watercolourist should have a copy of this, and if the rest of the painters of the world are smart, they will get one too.
