Bucchino takes on Rodgers,
By
This review is from: On Richard Rodgers Piano (Audio CD)
John Bucchino is an excellent pianist. When you consider that the man can't read music (he plays by ear and instinct), his achievements are all the more amazing. His work here, playing selected songs of Richard Rodgers on Rodgers' own piano, through the good graces of Adam Guettel, Rodgers' grandson, is an excellent example of his improvisatory skills.
My only problem with the album is his choice of material, since in general to my mind, the songs by Rodgers and Hart far outstrip Rodgers' later work with Hammerstein. Thus for every Rodgers and Hammerstein song on the album, I hear the ghost of a Rodgers and Hart song that could have been included instead. Likely most people will not agree with me on that. The fact that Bucchino is playing on Rodgers' own piano soon ceases to matter when you're listening: it's just a piano, after all.
