Book Description

October 22, 2001
An examination of the work of the Richard Rogers Partnership from 1987 to 1992, picking up from "Volume 1". Following the completion of the Lloyd's Building came expansion for the firm. A new office was established in Tokyo, and RRP were involved in a number of competitions and schemes. However, the economic recession hit, and many interesting and experimental schemes remained unbuilt. Included in this volume are over 40 projects arranged chronologically, beginning with a section on projects in the Tokyo office, including Kabuki-cho in Tokyo, one of the few projects that were built during this period, others falling foul of the Japanese recession. This is followed by a number of other projects from around the world including key masterplanning projects like St Paul's and Dunkirk. The Channel 4 Headquarters, the Strasbourg Court of Human Rights, 88 Wood Street and the Bourdeaux Law Courts are among the projects from the later part of the book. The volume is prefaced with a general introduction to the office during this period, its expansion into Tokyo, the next generation of partners and clients, and the major changes of the period. In a slight departure from the topics of the essays of "Volume 1", which charted the chronological development of the different offices Rogers set up, the other essays for this volume are based on themes key to the ethos of the practice and its founder. Richard Rogers' interests are not limited to creating new buildings; he is also a passionate advocate of quality in the built environment, the benefits of proper masterplanning and consideration of urban intervention in the life of the city. In the chapter "Masterplanning and the City", Ken Powell examines his role in key projects in the City of London and London Docklands and explores how his ideas were then further developed in his urban projects for a number of French towns, Potsdamerplatz in Berlin and Lu Zia Jui, Shanghai, China. The volume is rounded up in an interview by Richard Rogers, which deals with all of the themes of the book and previews some projects yet to be published.
