Random collection of words
on March 20, 2012
I got this book because our son recently became interested in learning abou the alphabet. We got a enter puzzle and have been singing about the alphabet lately. My intention with getting this book was to expose him (4 years old) to how the alphabet is used to make words.
I was expecting there to be some sort of clever introduction to the alphabet here. For example, we have a game the asks the child to identify the first letter in each book. Or perhaps a collection of words that show how the vowels can be pronounced, for example long "a" and short "a". Or a collection of words with the same consonant ending. Or at least an interesting story or short excerpts that make it fun and easy to remember parts of the alphabet.
This book doesn't do anything like that. No clever or fun ideas. Just cute but random illustrations, some words that start with the featured letter but mixed with plenty of words that just happen to have the featured lettered somewhere within and highlighted. The illustrations don't even tell some sort of story. You would do just as well using a regular story book and pointing out the use of a specific letter.
In short, aside from featuring one letter of the alphabet on each page, there is no additional thought, game or systematic to make learning the alphabet fun.
Until I find something better, we'll just stick to our song, the alphabet puzzle and our Winnie the Pooh alphabet game. This book is a waste of money.
