Great illustrations, good teaching tool, weak "story",
This review is from: Richard Scarry's The Animals of Farmer Jones (Big Little Golden Book) (Hardcover)
My 16-month-old son adores this book. We read it over and over again, and he can do a sign or a sound or a word for each of the animals now. The language of the "story" by Leah Gale is incredibly simple and repetitive (which is probably what kids love about it), but the illustrations by an early-career Richard Scarry are wonderful for all ages. My husband is particularly fond of the "beautiful white nay-nay." (Our son calls horses nay-nays because, according to the book: "'Neigh-neigh,' says the horse.") In addition to the featured animals: horse, cow, sheep, chicken, pig, turkey, duck, cat and dog, there is a barn owl in the illustration of the farmyard in the first page and a tiny mouse hides in several other scenes, so your kids can learn those too. I would have never gone out and bought this book new--it was a garage sale find--but it's been a total hit, so it'll definitely stay in our library for a long time!UPDATE - We just had turnips for the first time. My now 19-month-old thought about this concept of turnips for a while and looked me right in the face and said "Sheep." Why? Because we've read this book a thousand times and Farmer Jones gives turnips to the sheep. To be quite honest, one of the reasons I wanted to cook turnips was because they look so damn pretty in this book. Suffice it to say, this remains and influential volume in our house. :)

Was as expected, slightly worn. Double the size. Expected the book to be the size of the Little Golden Books, much bigger.

The Greatest Children's Book of All Time!,
This review is from: Richard Scarry's The Animals of Farmer Jones (Big Little Golden Book) (Hardcover)
This is the greatest children's book of all time. My mother and father read this to the five of us children - I can't count that high. Now as a reading specialist the literacy value in this book makes it even more valuable. The repetitive text let's the youngest of listeners "read" along with you. We had a larger version as children, but none of my siblings will fess up to having it - for fear I will take it for my classroom! I know it is somewhere in our family as there is no way any of the five of us would ever give it away!

I read this book in the 1970's to my three children and now have read it to three grandchildren. It is definitely a favorite. The duct tape holding it together has worn out many times.

Over 20 years ago my parents came to visit me and the children in England and brought over several books for them. One of them was, 'The Animals of Farmer Jones'. They loved it. The last time I saw it, it had a chewed corner and the pages were torn, it was well loved and very well read.
Today my children are 28 and 26 and I bet if I ask them they could still recite most of the book. I'm coming to the states in a few day and will buy several copies for my friends' children.

I love this book. I am 26 years old and my favorite memory is my dad reading this to me about a million times. So many, in fact, that my copy is help together with duct tape!!! (Yes, I still have it). I give this book to my friends and family that have babies. It is a classic--and a must for any child. But, beware--if you had this book as a child, the ending has changed. The pigs no longer say "Oink, Oink"--they are too busy eating!!!! Again, a must for any household that has a small child in it!!!!

My husband brought this book home from the library for our 21 month old son and he LOVED it. We have since purchased it. He will grab the book and say, "Farmer Jones- Read it". It's a great book for kids who are learning the animal sounds as they can join in while you are reading.
If you are looking for great books that kids will love Richard Scarry books are the best. My son literally wore out "Cars and Trucks and Things that Go" and "Richard Scarry's The Best Word Book Ever." The pages are falling out from so much reading.

My son is 21 months old and since we first read him this book a month ago, it has been his favorite of all time. He loves seeing the animals and hearing their sounds. The surprise feature of the book is the hide-n-seek with Farmer Jones. My son loves hearing "Where is Farmer Jones?" on every page but only seeing him a couple times (as if he's hiding). We read it at least 2 times a day.

My 3 year old loves this book. It has been her favourite since she was 18 months old. We've read it to her so many times she can "read" it back to us.
