More About the Author

Richard Scarry is one of the world's best-loved children's authors EVER! Generations of children all over the world have grown up spending hours poring over his books filled with all the colorful details of their daily lives. No other illustrator has shown such a lively interest in the words and concepts of early childhood. For himself, whenever he was asked how old he was, Scarry would always put up one hand and laugh, saying, "five!"
In his extraordinary career, Richard Scarry illustrated over 150 books, many of which have never been out of print. His books have sold over 100 million copies around the world, and are currently published in over twenty languages. Richard Scarry, Jr., also an illustrator, carries on his father's work today under the name of Huck Scarry. He was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Society of Illustrators in 2012.

This is a really fun book , especially for kids in the 3-6 range (maybe even age 2 if they have a longer attention span). I like to read a Christmas story to my two boys every night before bedtime in December, and sometimes it comes in handy to have some shorter stories to read (although it was hard to convince them to stop after just one or two stories!). My boys loved the stories, all related to Christmas, giving, and sharing. We're glad to have added this book to our collection!

My two year-old granddaughter loves this book! It's the first one she wants me to read to her when we sit down for our before nap or before bedtime reading time. I remember reading all the adventures of Lowly Worm, Huckle Cat,etc. to my kids when they were little and it's fun to share them again with their kids. I highly recommend this book!

When we got this book for review I was really excited because I remember Richard Scarry books from when I was a kid. I remember being entranced at this entire town he created. Each page is like several because there are little pictures scattered around with a few sentences for each one. In this book it has it's own little mini stories in it so you can get away with reading only a few pages at a time. And trust me, it's a LONG book! I know I'm not really up to reading the whole thing in a sitting.
My kids seem to like it and like seeing all the funny little animals doing their thing. It doesn't seem to be on their favorites list though. And they tend to grow a bit bored. Maybe they aren't going to be the Richard Scarry fan I was as a kid. Or maybe the age is just wrong. Or maybe it's because it's more focused on Christmas. It's hard to say. But it's a fun one to pull down for the holiday's and enjoy a few pages a night.
I'm giving this one 3/5 stars because of my kids reactions, but if you like Richard Scarry then you'll like this one.

Although I really enjoyed Shephards short stories about Christmas in "In God We Trust All Others Pay Cash" and "Twas the Night Before Christmas" Scarry's childrens book here is probably one of the best christmas books ever. It's true. He doesn't disappoint. The art is exceptional, as usual, and the story is one that captivates the imagination of our little people. A great pre-stocking stuffer. Happy Holidays.

Our 4 year old granddaughter LOVES this book and we read it every day. We love the Christmas "monopoly" game which she takes quite seriously and we laugh and giggle when we play.
