It really is the best counting book ever!,

This review is from: Richard Scarry's Best Counting Book Ever (Hardcover)
This is a fantastic counting book. There are lots of things to count on every page, with fun and detailed pictures in the usual style of Richard Scarry. The story is simple but entertaining, even though the book might be a little long to read in one go for a small kid, because it does require a lot of attention.
The text really helps to explain number to kids. Adding and subtracting are introduced with simple sentences ("One bunny and one bunny make two bunnies." or "Four bunnies go home. That leaves just one bunny.") and children are encouraged to group items in smaller sets as they count ("Eight pies: five pies are burned, but three are baked just right."). After number twenty the book goes ten by ten all the way to one hundred. Again, the text makes it clear that these big numbers are made putting together various groups of ten. The pictures are busy but not confusing - my favorite is the picture with one hundred fireflies in the night sky. The last two pages show give some practice, using pictures, in adding small numbers. I read the first part with my three year old boy and he seemed to love both the math theme and the story. He especially enjoyed the part where Mother Cat is trying to catch a flying watermelon :) Good fun, while practicing important reasoning skills!

Richard Scarry is probably my favorite childrens book author. Aside from the givens among classics: Dr. Seuss, The Berenstein Bears, Sweet Pickles - Scarry's work is also always apleasure to share. Very few contemporary childrens authors compare. I do recommend a new childrens book called Outside Kitty by JS Moore and Shel Silverstein's Everything On It as definite "must haves" for any child or teachers library shelf, but Richard Scarry has a plethora of unique, witty, and always wonderful reading for the little ones. This one will get them counting in no time at all.

My 4 year old has lots of books that count up to 10, so she was able to count to 10 really well. It was beyond 10 we had trouble with. We counted everything we saw: steps, toys, cabinets to get her practice getting to 20. Finally I found this book that goes to 100. It has little animals and objects that she likes to look at with numbers on them. She has favorites she wants to count. It has helped me so much, that she can count not only to 20 now but she is already counting to 40. We have 3 Richard Scarry books: this one, also "The Best Book Ever" which is also great for Pre-K learning, and "Good night Little Bear" which is another hit at our house. The artwork has a distinctive look to it, that seems to be timeless.

This book is truly the best counting book out there. I have read many with my child and this one truly engages her in a fun way. Would recommend to anyone teaching a toddler/preschooler counting.

The book is exactly what you'd expect from Richard Scarry. What I appreciate as an adult is that while the child counts (time and time again), I have something interesting and intricately drawn to look at. There's a reason Richard Scarry has sold more than 100 million copies of his childrens' books.

My boys are 4 and 6, and this has been my yonger son's favorite since he was 2 yrs. old. He learned to identify numbers and count far earlier than his brother, in part because he looked at this book several times per week. When he chooses a story for bed time it is either this or the John Deer ABC book.
My older son learned to skip counting with this book because the item to be counted are arranged by 2's or 5's on most pages.
