My son loves The Best Mistake Ever and Other Stories by Richard Scarry. I figured this would go over just as well. Not really. We read it once and he hasn't asked for it again. The stories are OK, not spectacular. It seems to be a lower level than The Best Mistake Ever, so maybe my son is just too old for it? He is 5 and normally enjoys a wide variety of books, from easy ones to more complex. I am still giving this book a 4 because I always loved Richard Scarry as a kid and I think this book would appeal to kids in the 2 and 3 crowd quite well.
My son loves all things Richard Scarry and this book is a great addition to his library. The stories are great to get him to put clues together and the silliness of Sam and Dudley just make him laugh! The illustrations are vibrant and colorful. I truly appreciate that the "bad guys" in the stories aren't in the least scary and even showing the consequence of bad behavior (washing dishes for stealing pies) These are just great books for children! I highly recommend getting this book!
I can't imagine raising children without owning a stack of Richard Scarry books to read them. This one, Cars and Trucks and Things that Go, and his collection of stories, (probably titled The Best Storybook Ever or words to that effect) lived at my house for at least 2 decades. If I had a buck for every time I read one of these to my kids, I'd be rolling in money now. We wore out 3 or 4 copies of each one. So buy this book and read it to your child. They'll love it, and so will you.
I've known about Richard Scary books for some time but I was waiting for my child to get old enough to enjoy them. What I didn't know (until we finally bought this book) is this book (unlike many of the others) has a "normal" story line. (well three stories) This quickly became the favorite and now that they've started to read (age 4 now) the others are becoming more interesting too. The busytown cartoons are also favorites. You won't go wrong with this one.
Well, I'm starting to get a little tired of reading these stories---because my 4 year old daughter LOVES this book and wants me to read it to her every day. So I guess it's a winner! Fortunately even though I'm starting to be able to quote the stories from over-reading, the pictures, as with all Richard Scarry's work, are detailed and fun and full of little nuances for anyone who wants to look, and they keep me entertained.
My 2 year old could get lost in the Richard scarry books for hours. Our whole family loves them, so much room to look at the pictures and make up stories as you go! Also fun and educational to look at all the expressions on the animals faces, talk about how they must be feeling or what they must be thinking.
Richard Scarry books are the best books for toddlers, because there is action on every page, with characters that pop up in all of the books. The Great Pie Robbery is no different and is a great introduction to what constitutes a mystery. It's my three-year-old grandson's favorite bedtime story.
Richard Scarry and Bill Peet were my favorite authors as a child, and it was so great to see this book again after 20+ years. I remember the characters and illustrations so well, and it's still just as delightful as I remember it as a child. Wonderful book...one of Richard Scarry's best!
This is a favorite with my grandsons. They love the stories and the fact that the characters are solving mysteries. As usual, the dialogue, situations and illustrations are perfect to keep young listeners or readers captivated. You can't go wrong with this Richard Scarry book.
My 2 grandsons can't get enough of Richard Scarrys busytown. One is 2 and the other is 3 and anything from these mysteries captures their attention. They love the songs, the characters, the stories. Very educational. Nice to see something they can really learn something from.
