4.0 out of 5 stars Great Looking Gate! This is the Taller version.
Pros:
-- Great looking gate compliments our hardwoods much more so than a white plastic gate (ugh).
-- The HL and HS are almost 8" taller than the other Richell gates. The extra height is definitely needed if your dog(s) is larger than a tea-cup breed. The Freestanding design is fairly sturdy although I would be concerned if it could really hold up against...

1.0 out of 5 stars This product cannot completely prevent pets from passing through.
"This product cannot completely prevent pets from passing through." This is not only my opinion, but a quote directly from the instruction manual. My 20# dog pushed it out of his way in a short time. It was mounted on a tile floor.

I tried adjusting the length so the dog could not move it but as long as the dog had access to the sides, he could move it...

This review is from: Richell Wood Freestanding Pet Gate, High-Large, Autumn Matte Finish (Misc.)
Pros:
-- Great looking gate compliments our hardwoods much more so than a white plastic gate (ugh).
-- The HL and HS are almost 8" taller than the other Richell gates. The extra height is definitely needed if your dog(s) is larger than a tea-cup breed. The Freestanding design is fairly sturdy although I would be concerned if it could really hold up against very large dogs.
Cons:
-- Definitely expensive. But worth it if looks are important and you forsee using it for a long period of time.
-- The gate folds nice and slim - but the freestanding legs stick out from the unit making it wider than I had hoped. But still easy to carry.
-- Not easy to adjust the width on the fly because there are four screws that secure the two pieces of gate together.
-- I would suggest coating the unit with a coat or two of polyurethane so that your dogs will not scratch the finish on top with their nails if they jump up or "hang" over the top of the gate.

This is a beautiful gate and does what we need to corral the Basset Hounds but for the price - couldn't they have made a latch or quick release of some sort?! We put it up over night and while we're at work but in the evening I have to use a screwdriver to let us all in the TV room!

I am quite pleased with the dog gate. It's very attractive. It looks much more like a piece of furniture than a typical dog gate. My only disappointment with the product is that it is rather heavy, making it somewhat difficult to move easily, which is something we need to do whenever we open the front door. (Our gate is intended to block our dog from entering the foyer.) I think I'll add felt strips over the rubber pieces on the feet to make it slide more easily.

I am less satisfied with the supplier. Delivery took a month rather than a week, and there was no notification of the delay from the supplier. However, it did eventually arrive, and it was not damaged. I will probably try to avoid this supplier for any other products, if I can, although I will use them if they are the only source of a product I want.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for baby-proofing, too!, July 17, 2007

After looking at many different products, I purchased this gate to prevent our toddler from getting into the fireplace. It's the perfect solution for our needs!

Things I like about it:
* Adjustable size -- allowed us to fit it perfectly around the fireplace
* Stable -- the legs are sturdy and large enough so it won't tip over, even when the baby pulls herself up on it
* Freestanding -- didn't require us to drill holes to secure it to the wall
* Good looking -- the wood frame and black bars blend into our decor (not an eyesore like those white baby-proofing fences)
* Ease-of-use -- installed in minutes, and easily folded to store when not needed

"This product cannot completely prevent pets from passing through." This is not only my opinion, but a quote directly from the instruction manual. My 20# dog pushed it out of his way in a short time. It was mounted on a tile floor.

I tried adjusting the length so the dog could not move it but as long as the dog had access to the sides, he could move it. The only way that I could contain my dog with this gate would be to anchor it to the woodwork.

Amazon and the manufacturer need to make this ("This product cannot completely prevent pets from passing through") known on the product description page BEFORE you order it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Improvement over the 20" Richell Frestanding Gate, August 16, 2007

This is the second Richell Frestanding Gate I have purchased. The first one broke after one too many falls and knock-overs by our teenagers-which I do not consider a product failure. The original 20" gate only truly fenced in one of our four small-breed dogs. (The 20 " gate is no contender against a determined Boston Terrier, I can assure you). However the new HL is 7.5" taller and is a VAST improvement over the original 20" gate. It looks much better than other gates out there and I love that I don't need to fasten this to a wall.

Richell Freestanding Gate, HL

This gate is perfect for a large doorway or hallway. It is high enough to keep out my dogs and designed to be very stable even in the largest of openings. It looks good and one side can swing to allow for human entry. I would buy it again in heartbeat. I wish I had know about them sooner. Worth the money to protect my carpets.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could use some improvements..., January 7, 2010

This review is from: Richell Wood Freestanding Pet Gate, High-Large, Autumn Matte Finish (Misc.)
I purchased this gate to keep my 40 pound Border Collie in the kitchen during the day while I am at work. The gate looks nice and I especially like the fact that it is freestanding. Unfortunately I have to use my husbands bowling ball on one side and a kitchen chair on the other side to prevent my dog from pushing the gate out of the way or completely over. That being said, I do think this gate would work for some dogs (not all) but it certainly isnt the amazing solution that some of the other reviewers make it out to be. The collapsible sides are nice, but they dont truly serve any function for the space in which I am using this gate (blocking the entrance from the kitchen to the living room). The gate does not slide to make it shorter or wider without using a screwdriver to loosen the bolt and then tighten it again. This is somewhat inconvenient for us to use it in multiple places throughout the day without keeping a screwdriver accessible at all times. Overall, we will keep this purchase and use it for what we originally intended, but we would not purchase another gate like this again or recommend to family or friends. I would however purchase from this seller again because the item arrived in a very short amount of time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Jumped it in two days, June 2, 2009
This review is from: Richell Wood Freestanding Pet Gate, High-Large, Autumn Matte Finish (Misc.)
We love the look of this gate (we got the tall one) and how easily it was assembled. However, our 11 lb pup got out within two days. She learned to put her feet on the crosswire and boost herself over. I called Richell - they were as nice as could be, but they could only suggest I return the item to Amazon. There is no present fix. They ARE designing a new gate that would help the problem. In the meantime, they have lovely crates that might do the job for you. I would suggest this gate only for dogs that are very small or are used to being confined. Good gate but way too clever dog!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Richell products, November 10, 2007
This review is from: Richell Wood Freestanding Pet Gate, High-Large, Autumn Matte Finish (Misc.)
This gate can be shortened or legthened and can be secured into a length. I keep mine non-secured, so I can move the pieces to open and close. I love it and it looks great, while keeping my dogs safe. LOVE Richell products and Amazon.
