4.0 out of 5 stars Doggie Gate Review - 27" height
I purchased this gate because of it's height and adjustability. It's perfect for my needs. It has kept my Jack Russell puppy contained in the kitchen and now prevents her from climbing the steps. I have found that the style of the gate is perfect for wrapping around my bottom step too. If you have a smart dog, you had better lock the sides because they'll quickly...

This is not a cheap gate. Obviously, if you are interested in it, you are looking for something that will look nice. This is not a cheap gate. Obviously, if you are interested in it, you are looking for something that will look nice. The problem is, once you weigh it down or put a chair or other heavy item behind it to keep it from being pushed along on the floor, it looks messy instead. I bought this gate to contain a 3 yr old Havanese weighing under 20 pounds. What we didn't realize is that if your floors are wood, even a small dog can easily push the gate and get around it. We've tried pads under the feet and he was still able to push it. Now we have a chair pushed up against the other side, and the sides of the opening where we had placed the gate are badly scuffed from the gate being pushed. We're fairly dissatisfied with the product, as you may imagine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Dog Gates, December 31, 2007
This review is from: Richell Wood Freestanding Gate, High-Small, Autumn Matte Finish (Misc.)
The Richelle Freestanding gate is an awesome product. It's sturdy, attractive, easy to assemble and very versatile. Unfortunately I started with the shorter size which my 12 week old cockapoo puppy hefted himself right over the second day so I exchanged it for the higher size gate and while it's too tall to walk over easily you can step over if you do it slowly.

I read complaints from other buyers that the gates weren't 'adjustable' enough for some buyer's needs but I actually like that you can fix it where you want it and it stays put. I also discovered that with minimal creativity the gate is very adjustable. I wanted to gate off one whole end of my kitchen where the crate and toys are and still have the option to open the gate easily in the center for going in and out to clean etc. So I bought two large gates, expanded them almost completely and left one right and one left footed side piece off each unit. The feet would have been annoying in the center of the room and the gate is quite stable without them. I joined the two parts in the middle using the cool little sliding latches Richelle provided for the side pieces. I had to redrill a couple holes on each side of the frame but it was a piece of cake. The gates look great and they keep my house and my puppy safe and sound.

Just size up if you have any doubt about your dog's climbing skills.
Oh one more thing ...this is a heavy product so you can't beat Amazon's free shipping!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dog House, May 22, 2010

Have had this gate in the shorter height for years and love it. Smaller dogs can't or won't jump over it, and humans can step over without moving the gate. Now there's a bigger dog in our house so I ordered the taller model. It works just as well, but I don't like the latches on each side. The gate is very stable without the latches, so they serve no real purpose. And they must be pulled free before collapsing the gate, which is 2 extra, but minor, steps. Overall the gate is terrific and I highly recommend for other 'dog houses'.
Note: The gate is perfect for doorways with odd angled walls. Just adjust the width and the gate blocks any opening.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this gate!, January 7, 2009

We decided to spend the extra money on this gate and Im glad we did! We needed to keep our dogs out of a room that used to have a sliding door and the opening was over 70" wide! We bought the wide one, make sure you get the right size for your doorway. We have beautiful hardwood floors so I didnt want some ugly metal contraption attached to my door way. This gate works great for our dogs! They are kind short though so if you've got tall dogs, it might not work as well. It did want to slide across the floor but we just put some carpet grips on the bottom of the feet and it solved that problem. I definitly recommend this gate for anyone with shorter dogs. We have a bassett and he can not get over it.

This was the only barrier that fit in a 47" wide opening, looked good, and is sturdy enough to withstand a jumping poodle puppy. If a pressure mounted gate won't work for you, or you don't want to install hardware in an opening, this is the gate for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Gate Around!, June 16, 2008

The Richell Freestanding Gate, HS is everything it says it is and more! Easy to assemble and move, folds flat for storage AND looks outstanding. In fact, everyone who has seen it has commented that they had never seen such a beautiful and functional dog gate. It is freestanding, so if you are looking for a absolute secure barricade, this gate would not be for you. I have two dachunds that my gate restrains well over-night, but I would never use this gate to enclose them all day if I was out of the house. The padded runners are solid and non-skid, which makes this gate hard to knock over--even by the most determined dog. I just love it!

I am using this gate in an unorthodox way to keep my kids away from the oven/stove. MY kitchen is too wide open to fence off the actual openings. It serves its purpose to a degree as an indication for them to stay away. They can still push it aside but at least I feel somewhat safer when they are in the kitchen and I am around but not directly in front of the stove. It works great as a freestanding gate where other gates that are more full proof just won't work. I also use it at the bottom of my stairs as a deterrent, though not full-proof. Otherwise, I would have to destroy the banister that swirls open to install a gate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Richell is THE BEST, November 10, 2007

There just is no better quality than Richell. A gate might seem ugly or cumbersome, but I get compliments on my Richell. They are just excellent quality! And the gate keeps my dogs safe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Attractive, sturdy, easy assembly, portable, no drilling required, December 15, 2011

Our house has an open floor plan and I needed to find a way to contain our new chocolate lab puppy to an area where I could keep her under supervision. I wanted something that was attractive and didn't require drilling holes into walls yet would be sturdy enough to hold up to a large-breed dog. This item seemed to fit all my needs.

Pros:

-Easy to assemble
-Attractive
-Sturdy, well constructed
-Does not require drilling into walls (free-standing)
-Rubber feet prevents scratching wood floors
-Portable (sort of...see below)

Cons:
-"Adjustable" width is defined by pre-drilled holes spaced approx. 1" apart
-Can be moved by large animal if not fitted to space (damage to paint, walls)
-Inconvenient to change width (requires removing 4 bolts), making it somewhat impractical to use as a portable gate
-The feet, which are necessary for stability, stick out >10" and can be a tripping hazard
-Lose more usable space than a "traditional" gate

Richell also offers a "one-touch" wood swing gate for doorways. After reading the reviews, I opted to get something else. Unlike these nicely designed wood-framed metal gridded gates, the "swing gate" is entirely constructed out of wood. Many buyers complained that their pets chewed on the wooden rods thereby destroying their appearance. Some pets even ate their way through the gates. I opted to buy the "Supergate Easy Close Metal Gate, Bronze" sold by Amazon ([...]). It is a pressure-mounted gate that comes with two extensions accommodating openings of 28"-38.5" wide. The feature that won me over is that, unlike most baby gates, this one gives you the option of leaving the gate in the full open position whenever your little furry bundle of joy is safely tucked away in their crate. I love it.
