5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
I bought the large freestanding gate earlier this summer in order to block off a large opening between my kitchen and family room. It's easy to step over and to move out of the way. My puppy has learned to stay behind the gate and doesn't even attempt to go over it even though he could. I was a bit disappointed to see the current price on Amazon. I bought it from...

3.0 out of 5 stars Only for Very Small Dogs
This gate is very easy to assemble and looks really good. Sadly for me, my Boston Terrier puppy- only 9lbs- is already able to climb over it. Only if you have a very, very small dog should you buy a 20 inch high gate. The photos of a full grown Collie relaxing by something of this height is very deceptive! My guess is that Collie casually stepped over the gate straight...

My puppy has learned to stay behind the gate and doesn't even attempt to go over it even though he could. I was a bit disappointed to see the current price on Amazon. I bought it from Amazon for around 99 dollars. It looks as though the price has gone up quite a bit. I think this must be a popular item right now with pet owners. I have seen it at Coscto online recently for 89! Deal or no deal this is the gate to get.

3.0 out of 5 stars Smart dogs will defeat this gate!, September 2, 2007
This review is from: Richell Wood Freestanding Pet Gate, Large, Autumn Matte Finish (Misc.)
We purchased this for our two shelties, age 14 weeks and 2 years. We have a wide opening to block so the size is great. My only complaint, however, is that a smart resourceful dog will figure out how to move this. It only took my 2 year old sheltie 5 minutes. He would simply stick his nose in between the bars & nudge it out of the way. We found a way to secure it so he couldn't move it but it may be only a matter of time. Once our puppy is housetrained, the gate will be history. Well made though and the price was the best I could find for this gate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality, attractive and does the job!!, March 8, 2007
This review is from: Richell Wood Freestanding Pet Gate, Large, Autumn Matte Finish (Misc.)
I ordered one of these gates to fit a large opening (68") between the foyer and living room. Prior to ordering this gate I was using ugly, plastic garden fencing to keep my little dogs out of the living area. This gate looks terrific. It was easy to put the pieces together. It's sturdy and I was so pleased I ordered 3 more to block the dogs from other areas of the house. It's very easy to step over, too.
Probably wouldn't work for large dogs or hyper little dogs that jump. But my little dogs see the gate and walk off and ignore it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Well made but to short, September 19, 2007

This gate is very well made & was easy to assemble, but it is to short to contain my 10" high Chihuahua (he simply jumps right over it). It might work well for small children, but I don't see it as being viable for most pets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific gate to keep pets out of the living room, October 28, 2007
This review is from: Richell Wood Freestanding Pet Gate, Large, Autumn Matte Finish (Misc.)
I wanted a pet gate to keep my two dogs, a terrier mix and a dachshund, out of the living room and this one has works beautifully. The gate is adjustable and long. It fits across the opening to my living room perfectly. The wood and blackened metal look good against my hardwood floors. Most gates on the market remind me of a kennel with wire mesh. This gate does not do that. Admittedly it's not furniture but it does go well in a more formal setting. The height of the gate is also just right to step over. So you don't need to open and close a gate door or move the gate to get by.

Richell has thought through this product very well. There are several rubber floor protectors to keep the gate from scratching the floor. They also keep the gate from sliding around. Assembly is a breeze. There are two hinge pins and four screws. The only tool I used was a screw driver. This gate is strong and sturdy. It does not wobble. The wood has a furniture grade finish and I expect it will last many years.

We have 4 small breed dogs that can't be trusted loose in the house. I tried this gate based on the other reviews and am thrilled at how great it looks and how well it works. It is definitely sturdy and can't be tipped over and low enough for an adult to easily step over. Absolutely not recommended for large dogs or dogs that are gate-jumpers. Fortunately, mine have never figured that out. I can't say enough positive things about his gate - it was the perfect solution for our household.

I purchased this and it was at my door within 36 hours! It is perfect to keep my two yorkies in the kitchen. I have an extra wide opening from kitchen to dining room and this gate enables me to keep them contained and lets any family members easily step over! It is good looking and extremely simple to assemble. I can't say enough good things about this product.

As a pet owner who wants to keep a nice look in my house without big bulky gates, this gate is great. If you have a big dog it will not work as it isn't very high, about 20 inches or so and the dog could just step over it. For us it is perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but nice, September 12, 2007

This little free standing gate is fairly short (just about knee height on me) but nice. We are waiting for our puppy so currently it is employed to keep my toddler out of my office area and it works pretty well. The non-skid pads are semi-effective. Part of the 'semi' is that my son is capable of pulling and pushing, unlike a puppy. The assembly was easy, the packaging was sturdy, the gate attractive. It is adjustable in width and we have it at almost the max - while you can change the width, it would require a screwdriver and moving 4 screws, so this isn't something you would want to do often. I suspect this will work until our puppy is a few months old, hopefully through the training period - but not much longer due to the height of the gate (low) and the future height of our dog, a goldendoodle - half retriever and half full size poodle.
