Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Richmond, Virginia boasts a proud legacy of achievement among its African-American residents. Known as the birthplace of black capitalism, Richmond had at the turn of the 20th century one of the largest black business districts in America. Medical pioneers, civil rights activists, education leaders, and enterprising bankers are listed among the city's African-American sons and daughters. As individuals these men and women made their mark not only on Richmondís, but also the nations, history. As a community, they have endured centuries of change and worked together for the common good. In their determined faces and in unforgettable scenes of the past, we celebrate and pay tribute to their history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Celebrating Success, April 7, 2002
By C. Ryan (Richmond, VA) - See all my reviews
WOW! As a native Richmonder I was completely awed by this book. It captures the lives and events of Black Richmonder's with vivid pictures and thorough captions. This book is more than just a picture book because the writer took the time to research and write detailed captions about EACH and every picture. The book was a joy and the pictures were fantastic. The book is divided into easy to follow sections and includes sections on Landmarks, Churches, Politicians and Education. (There is even a section devoted to Virginia Union University) Now all can see the Richmond I have always known a place where Blacks have fought and thrived for many years. Kudus to the author!
