Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton (September 20, 1885 – July 10, 1941) was an American ragtime and early jazz pianist, bandleader and composer.

Widely recognized as a pivotal figure in early jazz, Morton claimed to have invented jazz in 1902. Morton was composer of the first Jazz composition ever published, Jelly Roll Blues, in 1915.
