Book Description

November 21, 2006
Rick Gillis: REALLY Useful Job Search Tactics by Rick Gillis is a contemporary, real world, “street credible” handbook on job search techniques. It has been written to help today's job seekers (whether currently employed or not) navigate the brave new world of human resource software and management tools as well as, and perhaps most importantly, how to create The Superior Resume™ (this is not your old college resume).

Rick Gillis: REALLY Useful Job Search Tactics will teach you how to internalize the Rick Gillis mantra: “Show me, as an employer, how you are going to Make Me Money or Save Me Money™ and I will assure you of getting the job you want.”

The issues raised and addressed by Rick Gillis: REALLY Useful Job Search Tactics include age-discrimination and the mature job seeker, the entry-level job seeker, the stay-at-home Mom (we call her The Professional Mom), how to really network, getting the hiring manager on the phone and, the single most important component of the book: How to make yourself, your resume and your interview so compelling that your recruiter will be afraid to let you leave the office for fear that you will end up with the competition!

Rick Gillis: REALLY Useful Job Search Tactics will guide you step by step through the amazing process of embedding keywords and phrases in your resume that will guide it the top of the pile—so that a real person will actually see it! (You are aware, of course, that your resume is actually “graded” by a computer before a real person sees it - if anyone sees it at all.)

Every bit of advice offered in Rick Gillis: REALLY Useful Job Search Tactics can be applied to your job search today!

About the Author

Rick Gillis, founder of The Really Useful Job Company, is a talk radio host, public speaker and author. After several years as a live-sound engineer based out of El Paso, Texas followed by nearly 10-years in commercial real estate, Rick relocated to Houston in 1995 seeking a change of career. In a very short time, he became employee number one of a brand new internet start-up called HoustonEmployment.com, the first Houston-based local employment website. As a direct result of Rick's sales efforts, HE.com quickly became the go-to site for a host of the most recognized corporations located in Houston such as Compaq Computer (now HP), Continental Airlines, The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Treatment Center, Shell Oil Company, Rice University and even major league baseball's Houston Astros. In early 1998, Rick was asked to speak to a job seeker's networking group on how to utilize the internet in the job search. During that first presentation, Rick began studying job seeking. Watching, listening and learning from job seekers, as well as the human resource and staffing company professionals he was meeting on a daily basis, Rick developed a version of what soon came to be known as "Guerilla Job Search Tactics" - a presentation of the fundamentals of the job search that most academics and professionals don't even acknowledge. The compelling central theme of this message is simple: "Show me, as an employer, how you are going to make me money or save me money-and I will assure you of finding the job you want." This basic premise applies to all aspects of the job search from the preparation of your Superior Resume and "30-second elevator pitch" to the interviews that result. Even more importantly, it has been proven to apply to all levels of job seeking - from entry level to the boardroom. It is this simple statement, coupled with his energetic and entertaining style, that has launched Rick's professional speaki

More About the Author

Rick Gillis has been involved in the business of employment since 1997 when he was instrumental in introducing the first local employment website to the greater Houston market.

Over the past several years, Rick has aggressively studied the practice of job seeking from the perspective of both the employer and employee. It is based on these observations that he has written his latest book,
"The Real Secret to Finding a Job? Make Me Money or Save Me Money!"
(Trafford Publishing/July 2009)

Rick has been involved in or has intimate knowledge of many aspects of the employment business to include resume creation--specifically, his Pre-Resume(tm) concept, employment advertising, recruiting, pre-employment assessments, networking and social networking sites, age-discrimination issues, the human resources function, best practices as they apply to management, diversity, legal issues, staffing companies, web based applicant-tracking systems and, of course, Internet employment protocols.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is REALLY USEFUL!, February 24, 2007
This review is from: Rick Gillis: Really Useful Job Search Tactics: A Handbook of Contemporary Job Hunting Techniques (Paperback)
I had the pleasure of seeing Rick Gillis speak at a conference in the Houston area about a year and a half ago. I was blown away by how clear and "obvious" his message was, yet no one seemed to be putting into action the ideas he was suggesting. In a recent internet search I found his website which lead me to this book. I ordered it and read it cover to cover within a couple of weeks. Again, I am blown away by how clear and "obvious" his message is, and yet NO ONE SEEMS TO BE PUTTING INTO ACTION THE IDEAS HE'S SUGGESTING! There is absolutely no doubt that this information will give you the advantage in the job search and interviewing process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rick Gillis' advice helped me get a job, February 7, 2007
By
SP (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rick Gillis: Really Useful Job Search Tactics: A Handbook of Contemporary Job Hunting Techniques (Paperback)
I was fortunate enough to hear Rick Gillis speak live about his job search techniques several times. His advise applies to all ages, but as an over-fifty job seeker, I can confirm from personal experience that Rick's totally correct when he says that being older makes your job search much harder. I followed Rick's suggestions on reorganizing my resume, emphasizing accomplishments, and including keywords. After I revamped my resume, I got noticeably more responses from employers, and ultimately landed exactly the job I wanted.

Rick's advise was very useful - granted, it was my experience that got me the job, but I have to give Rick much of the credit for getting my resume read by the decision makers instead of being weeded out by resume scanning software. And if you don't know what that last sentence means, you REALLY need to read this book!
