Editorial Reviews

In the hierarchy of funk, no artist has been more exciting, more inspired and 'badder' than the Super Freak himself, Slick Rick a.k.a. Rick James. His bass heavy songs and his outrageous persona set the standard for hardcore funk, what he dubbed 'punk funk'. For funksters ever since, James hits like 'Love Gun', 'Super Freak' and 'Give It To Me, Baby' have been among the guiding lights of the genre. Motown. 2006.

5.0 out of 5 stars Introducing Rick James January 22, 2007
Format:Audio CD
THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION is perhaps the greatest single disc collection of Rick James hits. Sixteen top 25 r&b hits are included here in chronological order along with the popular album cut "Fire And Desire". All songs are presented in 7-inch single edits except for "You and I", "Mary Jane", "Fire and Desire", "Cold Blooded" and "Ebony Eyes". Bonus points for including "High On Your Love" and "Can't Stop", two top 20 r&b hits rarely found on a Rick James compilation. For the casual fan, this collection is just what the doctor ordered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old School Funk KING...period! August 13, 2008
Format:Audio CD
Rick James is one of Funks all time greats and will be untill the end of time. His fusion of drugs, sexual themes, and down right "Ballsy" lyrics made Rick a favorite among the Gente back home, I mean all the homeboys loved him, the white boys loved him and the blacks loved him. Classic hits like Superfreak, Give it to me Baby, You and I, and Dance wit Me will always be heard at an Old School Party or Old School Club Night as well as weddings...great party jams!!! He was also very inclined to sing the slow jam with the same passion...Ebony Eyes with Smokey Robinson was an instant hit and remains a classic. Rick James also introduced us to the great Tina Marie and their hit "Fire and Desire" has the same staying power as all the songs I've mentioned...classic "Mary jane " has remained an anthum for the herb indulgents of the world...Rick James is well represented completly here on the Definitive collection and is a must have in any muisc, funk, old school collectors collection..."Rick James was a hell of an artist!!!"

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm Rick James B****!!! November 22, 2008
By HBHCFSU
Format:Audio CD
OK, I'm usually not a fan of this type of music, but after hearing some of the songs I can totally understand the appeal. I have to say Dave Chapelle had something to do with me buying this album, but I have no regrets. Not my usual punk rock, not even close, but hell, I've got an open mind and this is some good music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Rick James March 16, 2006
Format:Audio CD
the Brother was the Last King of the Funk. Rick James had his own Gumbo of the Funk. you always knew the Synth Bass grooves&His trademark Horns. Mary Jane,Bustin Out are still Slammin.Dance Wit me is still Bumping. 17 is cold with that Break down. cold Blooded is still Cold.Ebony Eyes with smokey Robinson is classic.Rick James never sugar coated the Funk,He always kept it real.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this album especially when working-out October 23, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is dance funk. Yes, it was played on the disco floors, but funk is less repetitious and has a dirtier feel than those long, repetitious disco songs. I love this album especially when working-out. It brings high energy and just makes my workouts fun. The only thing I don't like is those unoriginal 80s pieces at the end of the album. I deleted those and it's a better album for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rick James "Definitive Collection" March 17, 2014
By Don
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This has most of your Rick James favorites and then some. Although when you play the CD on any of your electronics the songs don't match to what it shows on the playlist. The CD is pretty good and was glad I got it. If you like funk, disco, dance and or slow songs, then this CD has it all. It's a good buy.
