5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally sturdy
I bought this suitcase in the late 90s and it's still in great shape, despite a lot of abuse. Not that I recommend doing this, but I often tuck the handle in and sit on the suitcase when I'm waiting at train stations, bus stops or airports. The wheels have held up well to all sorts of surfaces, including cobbled streets and gravel. I also sometimes don't bother picking...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sent it back
Gave this product three stars because it is indeed lightweight, as advertised, which is no small thing for me - a 4'11" woman. Frankly it is barely middle of the road.

After giving the bag a good lookover, I sent it back because it seems more like a $70 bag. The stitching is poorly executed, the material isn't great, the zipper pulls seem cheap, and the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally sturdy, October 3, 2006

I bought this suitcase in the late 90s and it's still in great shape, despite a lot of abuse. Not that I recommend doing this, but I often tuck the handle in and sit on the suitcase when I'm waiting at train stations, bus stops or airports. The wheels have held up well to all sorts of surfaces, including cobbled streets and gravel. I also sometimes don't bother picking the suitcase up when going down stairs, letting it simply thump along behind me and it's still in one piece. (Again, this is not something I'd recommend doing!)

European and Asian airlines have much lower weight allowances on carry-on baggage, so I do find that I have to check it in unless I'm flying on an American carrier. Whenever I do that, I make sure to pack my toiletries and a day's worth of clothing in my Civita Day Pack just in case the airlines misplace my luggage.

I love this suitcase and wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I ever do manage to destroy it -- I cannot recommend it highly enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent travel bag - especially for TALL people, September 6, 2006
This review is from: Rick Steves 21" Roll Aboard (Apparel)
I love Rick Steves' books, so I gave this travel bag a go. My husband is exceptionally tall (6'7") and he loves the extra-extendable handle for the Roll Aboard bag. The sturdy construction is no illusion. I've now sent this bag as presents to most of my family members, and everyone loves it. There is an excellent color selection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Carryon, November 25, 2006

This is an excellent roll-aboard that meets carryon regulations. It is made of sturdy material, has a large interior so you can get a lot in it, has handy outside pockets. It is very stable, great for those mad dashes through airports. The suitcase fits easily in the overhead compartments and the expandable feature is nice to have when you've reached your destination and want a little extra space. I bought a green one and liked it so much that we bought a blue one for my husband. Both colors are attractive.

Gave this product three stars because it is indeed lightweight, as advertised, which is no small thing for me - a 4'11" woman. Frankly it is barely middle of the road.

After giving the bag a good lookover, I sent it back because it seems more like a $70 bag. The stitching is poorly executed, the material isn't great, the zipper pulls seem cheap, and the inside lining is kind of funky. The side handle isn't comfortable, and lastly, although the handle pulls out extra long, which is good for a tall person, you can't make it stay at the halfway point, so it isn't good for a short person.

I ended up purchasing the Eagle Creek Tarmac ES 22 - yes more expensive, and 1.5 los heavier, but with many more features and a lifetime unconditional guarantee, it is a much better bang for the buck.

I just received mine and will purchase another for my husband. Finally giving in to having wheelie bags after carrying convertible shoulder bags overseas for many years (same idea as Rick Steves' bags, but another make). The long handle is great, I love the compartments, and the light weight is fab. I chose merlot and it's a nice color also. Really good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best roll aboard for travel!, July 8, 2007

I have had this bag for a couple of years, and it is the only bag I use for travel now. It works for vacations in Europe and the Caribbean and for business travel. It is the best roll aboard that I have ever owned. I use it a couple of times each month, and I am not easy on my luggage. It gets dragged over cobblestones, curbs, steps, dirt roads and grass, and the wheels and other components still work well. It holds more than any of my other 21" roll aboards, and the exterior pockets are very handy. The expansion feature is a big plus when returning home with more than I left with. The zippers are very strong - it is possible to pack it with the expansion feature for initial closing and then to zip close the expansion feature to compress the contents so it fits in an overhead bin.

Since the advent of liquid restrictions, I have been checking the bag instead of rolling it onto the plane, and I have been impressed with how it has held up to luggage handlers - no rips, snags or problems in the fabric, seams or zippers. My husband needs a new bag, and we will be purchasing one of these for him.

If you're looking for a lightweight bag that is durable and versatile - look no further. This is a great bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, lightweight suitcase, June 10, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was looking for a lightweight wheeled suitcase. This is not only lightweight and very sturdy, but holds a remarkable amount of stuff. You'll love it. I also got the small bag that hooks over the handle and that, too, held more than you would think possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Travel Find, April 19, 2007

I'm thrilled with this roll aboard piece of luggage. It is compact, holds more than I thought it would and feels secure pulling it about perhaps due to the feel of a solid wheel construction. It immediately became "my friend" the first time I used it...it's compactness was easily managable; the easy pull up and down handles worked with ease and functioned solidly. The only slight negative I have for it is the outside covering material picks up string, cat hairs, etc. Those are easily removed and would not at all stop me from buying another one - (maybe in a different color). I'm very happy with the product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice little bag, June 7, 2007

I just took this bag to Europe. It was not my only bag- but it held a lot for it's size. Since I plan to use it for business in the future, I was concerned that the soft front would make clothing wrinkle more than a standard 21" rolling bag. It did not, because of the rigid sides. So, it gives you the structure of standard bag and the flexibility of a duffle bag. Mostly, I love that it's so light weight- really makes a difference.
Also, it survived the trip completely unscathed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rick Steves 21" Roll Aboark, Blue Spruce, January 8, 2008

The item is exactly like the one on the RS website. I used this as my only suitcase on a month trip to Italy and it held up fine despite the beating it got. Roomy and expandable. I just love it.
