5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Place To Start, March 8, 2010

This review is from: Rick Steves' France 2010 with map (Paperback)
I always start with Rick Steves when I am planning a trip. I found his discussions of places I was interested in seeing during this trip to France to be informative and true to his "off the beaten path" roots. Although I admit that with his popularity some of his paths are getting pretty well trodden these days as well.

I think the secret to finding a good guide book is finding one that suits your traveling style. Rick Steves is probably not for every traveler but for those who want an experience that is a bit less formal than many of the other big name books, his books are a good starting point.

This was the first guidebook I bought and, although I'll read others, it will probably be the one book I take with me when I leave for France.

5.0 out of 5 stars French Vacation, August 2, 2010

This review is from: Rick Steves' France 2010 with map (Paperback)
I love Rick Steves' guidebooks so my opinion may be a bit biased. I have used his books on many self guided, self planned, Euro vacations. His helpful hints and pre-screening of sights makes my task of planning what to do and how long to stay much easier. This will be my first trip to France other than a short stay in Paris in 2000 and another in 2006, both courtesy of RS Paris guide books. The France 2010 guidebook is very similar in style to the others I have used (Germany, Italy, Prague, Eastern Europe, Norway, GAS combo). He has the country broken down by region with excellent transportation info and tips. I find the hotel advice the most helpful. While you can go to many internet search sites, you really don't know what you are getting. My experience with RS recommendations is that they are just as he describes them. My only advice, if he does not have a really good recommendation (like in Munich) use the internet since you are likely to find a cheaper place and it is a crap shoot anyway.

What can I say, Rick Steve's does it again with his latest update on France! I usually buy his country guide along with the matching Michelin Green Guide for any European Country we plan on visiting. An excellent combination!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Planning Tool, July 30, 2010

This review is from: Rick Steves' France 2010 with map (Paperback)
Rick Steve and his staff continues to provide the reader with a handy and concise "tool" to plan your trip. The layout is easy to follow with topics "gathered" in sections for individual review if so desired. A great pick and choose source to carry on your trip as a continuing guide for food and shelter. Price comparisons and first hand information coupled with telephone numbers and individual contact sources make it your personal guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars the only book we take overseas, December 30, 2011

This review is from: Rick Steves' France 2010 with map (Paperback)
We traveled to Europe 3 times last year. The first time taking 4 books and a number of maps. The last 2 trips (and all future trips) will be a lighter load as we will just need Rick Steves' books. We were delighted with the hotels he suggested and any restaurant listed was among the finest food we had. One thing, you do have to book your hotels early since his books are gaining popularity.

This is the third Rick Steves book we have purchased for use on our vacation and I wouldn't leave home without it! He gives you ALL the information that you need to see the inportant sights plus excellent recommendations for eateries, hotels & B&B's. The nicest thing about these guides is that they are written from a normal travellers point of view which is more down to earth. He tells it like it is!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rick Steves France, September 20, 2010

Looking forward to experiencing France the Rick Steve's way. For now; however, the trip has been postponed until a later date. My 82 yr. old mother was going on the trip with me. She is having to have hip replacement surgery in about 2 weeks. Of course, taking the trip following the recovery period will be soooooooooooo much better considering that she will be able to walk free of pain. The convenient luxuries that we are used to here in the USA are not quite as readily available in Europe. We are looking forward to the trip when all is well. Of course, once we return from France, we will be able to give a thorough review of the book. In the meantime, Rick Steves has laid out ways to make the most of your sightseeing making the most of each and everyday.
