For Great Travel in Great Britian, Get Rick Steves,

This review is from: Rick Steves' Great Britain 2010 with map (Paperback)
I had such a fun and fluid trip with Rick Steves' Great Britian 2008 that I rushed out and bought the 2010 edition to start day dreaming/planning my next trip back. It was my first time in Europe and I went alone for a month with nothing but the guide book and I had a blast! Thanks to the guide book it was totally hassle free. I got good deals on negotiating train tickets and bed and breakfast rooms by knowing the what, where, and why that a good deal was available (rather than just be an obnoxious traveller- an easier roll to slip into than I would have thought). The guide book taught me how to get around, how to balance cash use vs. credit cards, etc., etc. so I could feel comfortable to just relax and play my travel by ear. I can't wait to go back, and thanks in part to Rick Steve's I can afford to go more often or for longer trips because of all the money it saved me. If you're going to spend thousands of dollars traveling to Great Britian, you'd be crazy not to drop ten to twenty bucks on this book. It's worth its weight in "travel" gold.

As usual Rick Steves does a great job. We have found that his interests in sights, people, and towns are matched well to ours. We have used his guide books for many other countries for a great trip and feel that the one on UK and Ireland is just as good if not better.

The book came quickly and was in beautiful condition. A real buy at the price. It was a real asset in planning our 21 days wandering around G.B.

You could easily fill a book about England or Scotland alone (in fact Rick Steves has a book only for London). However, when you simply have to cram it all into one tight guide he does a great job in his 2010 travel guide to Great Britain. For the most part, his recommendations are all entertaining and worthwhile. Rick covers all the bases and levels as best as you can in a single guide to an entire country. From the historical, geographic, and possible itinerary overview of Great Britain to the country specific information (England, Scotland, Wales), region highlights (highlands, lowlands, isles, etc), and city/area locations almost all of the big attractions and quite a few of the more endearing smaller ones are touched on. I would take his itinerary more as a guideline than a rule of thumb. In fact, I believe he intended it as such since this book goes into a good amount of detail and provides options which were not allocated within his itinerary. Although Rick includes an obvious lean towards B&Bs in his recommendations I feel that this choice is spot on in trying to delve into the culture and atmosphere. Nonetheless, he still provides a few alternatives for the strongly opposed. From hotels, to restaurants, to attractions everything is done with thought, wit, and a touch of humor. This guide goes beyond just saying "go there, do that" but actually provides a dialogue of what you may see and frequently the history of why or how it's there. He gives tips to pay lower fares and avoid lines and provides details and walking and driving tours on occasion. There are even helpful sections on packing, currency, transportation, etc. Of all the tour books I've read over the years I feel that Rick Steves' guides are not only some of the most useful but also some of the easiest to read. Hope this helps.

Nice review. Good areas of coverage, though we were indeed looking for the Peak District/Derbyshire to be reviewed and found it entirely missing.

You can always count on Rick to provide great advice on where to stay, what to see, and what to eat. Love the history that is included and I read the info aloud from his books on the way to any site so that we know the history surrounding the castle, the ruins, the architecture etc. I have used his books throughout France and in London, and all future trips to the UK and Europe, his books will go with me.

Familiar with Rick Steves shows, the information within the book needed for a business trip to Scotland was as expected. What wasn't expected, writing/notes within the book AND the map was NOT in the book as advertised; which would have been handy since the book was being used for actual travel. Had I known Amazon Prime sends moderately used items, I would have paid for shipping to have an intact book.

This book went with us to the UK. It was great for reminding us of why we wanted to visit certain places, the cost of admission and address.
We used this for researching the UK for our trip and found it to be very helpful. Maps are included.

A pleasure to read, just the right size, this was the main guide for our travel thru the UK. Although Lonely Planet covered more places, I think this guide did a better job in identifying what's worth seeing with entertaining and very informative reviews. Having to buy just one giude for a vacation of a couple of weeks, I'd go for this book, although I was glad to have also purchased Lonely Planet for those small places we drove by on our way from London to Edinburgh.

I just got my book today and it is BETTER than I hoped for. It looks like it tells and shows everything I'll need to have a great trip. It not only tells you about museums, etc to see but shows you diagrams of the rooms. It shows maps of where the tube and other transportation is located near the site you want to see. Thanks Steve! A very comprehensive book that is easy and clear to follow.
