5.0 out of 5 stars Rick Steves Rome Guidebook, December 11, 2005
This review is from: Rick Steves' Rome 2006 (Paperback)
We lucked onto this book in a "free" bookshelf at a hostel in Switzerland, and although I questoned my sanity as I carried it for 2 weeks before using it, in the we end found it extremely useful. The walking tours are very well done, and give you much of the detail of a guided tour without the need to do it on someone else's schedule. The tip for how to get into the Colosseum without waiting in the ticket line there would have more than paid for the book, even if we had paid for it twice! Highly recommended. We had a place to stay already lined up, so I can't comment on the lodging and eatery recommendations in the book-we didnt use them. Go to hostelz.com for places to stay!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rome - Rick Steves, January 7, 2006
This review is from: Rick Steves' Rome 2006 (Paperback)
We used an earlier version of this book on our honeymoon and I am going to purchase one for my daughter-in-law and her girlfriends to take with them to Rome. The walking tour is wonderful and if you time it right you end up at the Spanish Steps at nightfall. Buildings take on a special glow and the changing colors and sounds of people having fun are a real treat. We ate at a local place near Vatican City serving a buffet of appetizers, local wine on the table, local people!
We even ripped pages out to slip in our pockets on our Roman adventures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rick Steves' Rome, March 20, 2006

While there are literally dozens of Rome guides, Rick Steves provides more than the highlights of Rome's vast array of neighborhoods, museums, antiquities, and cathedrals. His insider tips are just what the traveler needs to avoid lines, take great walks, and organize your time. As an experienced traveler, I thought the book might be too basic, but greatly enjoyed his writing style and organization. His tips on neighborhood restaurants is perfect for those who want to combine museum/cathedral hopping with a convenient, untouristy meal. I look forward to using Rick's guides for other cities.

I got this guide as a gift for someone going to Rome. I ran through it first and it was just what I expected. I love Rick Steves's guide to specific cities. I have never used his country/region versions. I like his city ones because they are so exact and percise.

He gives lots of useful information to the worriesome traveller and also provides such great historical, factual, and contemporary descriptions of everything and anything in Rome. His tours, his guides, his outlines are all just well organized, to the point, and written in a style no one would mind reading.

A definite gift or purchase

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't go to Rome without this book!, December 4, 2006

This review is from: Rick Steves' Rome 2006 (Paperback)
I just returned from Italy where I used this book practically as a bible while in Rome. Having used other travel books around the world, I really enjoyed and appreciated how Rick Steves organizes his book and provides you with just the right amount of detail and direction to make the most out of your trip.

Only having four days in Rome, his book helped me see the major sites, avoid long lines and make the best of a short trip. I recommend reading the recommended 'tours' the evening before to help you plan your attack. It was great to be able to wander through the Forum, book in hand and hit the highlights while understanding the magnificance of the place.

The way the tours are grouped are fabulous. I really felt like I saw the best that Rome had to offer.

The tips on avoiding lines was invaluable! Take those tips to heart and you'll save many hours of frustration. I used a combination of restaurants I found, plus his recommendations and never had a bad meal.

Truly a great book, now If only I can find a similar book for Asia.

Great "tips" on how to get the most out of your trip. His style of writing makes you want to read more--very funny! Especially love the small section on Italian phrases. Thanks Rick--now we just have to go to Rome to use it!

Any American contemplating a visit to Rome will be well advised to pick up a copy of this book. Rick not only describes the things to do but lets you know what NOT to do and what to avoid - sage advise for the first-time visitor. He also directs the tourist to out-of-the-way restraints and hotels where one can meet real Romans not just doormen. This book is a must!

Mr. Steves Rome tour guide is, like most of his other books very useful. I always want to know where to stay and have that arranged before I arrive in a city. Rick's useful information helps with that. He has very good ideas for arranging a tour of the city and helps with places to eat.
