No-nonsense, in-your-face guide to Scandinavia,

When my wife and I visited Scandinavia, we did some background research, but this is the only book we brought with us. Unlike the encyclopedia of travel books like Lonely Planet or Rough Guide (although I don't know if they have editions specific to Scandinavia Scandinavia) which inundate you with plethora of choices that are written with little or no bias, Rick Steves sifts through the myriad of information with his own (somewhat opinionated) taste, and only picks out sights you want to see, restaurants you want to eat, and places you want to stay; and recites only from his own experiences, adding credibility to the information he provides. The prices in my edition (I think it was a '96 edition) were off by 5-10% (on the downside, of course), but the information was to the point, accurate, and contained no fat. The text is fun to read in your bed or bathroom, and although Steves seems to get better off every year and started to lose the hard-core, dirt-cheap travel spirit, I was impressed by the fair bargains he found all over the place, especially in this part of the world where things tend to be a bit pricey. I would most definitely buy his series of travel books on my next trip to Europe. And I certainly wish he shared his wisdom with guidebooks of regions outside of Europe as well.
