Book Description

October 5, 2010 Rick Steves
You can count on Rick Steves to tell you what you really need to know when traveling in Spain. In this guide, you’ll find an inviting mix of exciting cities and cozy towns. Explore the lively cities of Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla, and follow the Route of the White Hill Towns in Andalucía’s sun-drenched countryside. Experience the works of the great masters — from El Greco to Picasso to Dalí — and learn how to avoid the lines at the most popular museums. Self-guided walks lead you through the castles, cathedrals, and villages of this ancient but modern land. End your day with a glass of Rioja wine and a plate of tapas — then join the locals for an evening of flamenco. Rick’s candid, humorous advice will guide you to good-value hotels and restaurants. He’ll help you plan where to go and what to see, depending on the length of your trip. You’ll get up-to-date recommendations about what is worth your time and money. More than just reviews and directions, a Rick Steves guidebook is a tour guide in your pocket.

This book was purchased after a spur-of-the-moment decision to travel to Spain over Thanksgiving. The book allowed us to experience the country in ways that could have taken months of planning. Our visits to Barcelona, Granada, Costa del Sol and the white towns, Tangier (Morocco), Seville and Madrid yielded a treasure trove of memories to keep for a lifetime. We took advantage of restaurant recommendations, walking tours, and many other advisory sections that proved to be very accurate. Don't travel to Spain without it! One caveat: realize that the book is primarily written to advise the high season visitor. Our visit in late November was quite different. For example, the book advised us to avoid a restaurant in Tangier, Morocco because it would be filled with tourists. In our case, we were the only two people in the whole place on a Friday evening; our food was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience, including watching locals walking in the street below.

I've always been a fan of Rick Steves - especially his laid back attitude and desire to experience foreign countries through open-mindedness and willingness to integrate with the local population. So this was the first book I bought when my wife and I decided to go to Spain. Unfortunately, it's a tremendous disappointment. My first issue is the complete lack of information about much of the country. He includes information about side trips to Morocco, yet nothing about Valencia - the third largest city in the country. How about a guide of the U.S. without Chicago? Furthermore, there are so few hotel and restaurant recommendations - and those are so vague as to be totally unhelpful - that one will have to rely heavily on other sources to know where to sleep at night. But perhaps my biggest issue is that it's told from a singular viewpoint. Being a foodie and a wine fanatic, I really wanted to know more about dining in San Sebastian (a city with more Michelin-rated restaurants than any other in the world) and the many wine regions. Steves essentially dismisses the best that San Sebastian has to offer by warning about the "commitment of time and money." Instead, his discussion is focused on pub food. There are two pages on wine.

The back cover of this book states that Rick Steves will "tell you what you really need to know when traveling in Spain." That may be true for some people, but I'm back on Amazon looking for more books on Spain.

As usual, Rick Steves' Spain 2011 travel guide is helpful and informative. Great information - easy to follow - information you don't even think of before travel which is helpful.
